Based on the res increase, you're looking at about a 40% drop in FPS. Whether this is OK for you or whether it will take advantage of the 144hz (G-sync will have a benefit regardless of fps) is dependent on which games you play and what detail level you're willing to play at.

I have a 780 which is a bit slower than your 970 and I'm also looking at a 2560x1440 144hz monitor atm, but I'll only be playing older games from my backlog on it until I can get a cheap 980 Ti or 1070/1080, so no FPS concerns.

Still, if you intend to keep the monitor a good while, no harm in buying it now and then upgrading GFX if you need to down the line.
I'm waiting for Black Friday though unless a really good deal comes up, they're too pricey for what you get atm

Thanks thats sound advise, was guessing this myself, ill hold off for now as you said, ill stick to my 1080 monitor till gfx cards drop a tad, losing 40% is quite a loss. Black friday not far away, lets see what the future holds
