Hey guys,

So as I posted on another thread last week I have picked up 2 x 1080ti Aorus Xtremes and they run great with my Corsair HX 850. (Ignore my sig, the Ax1500i died). Although the cards work fine I still fancy getting a bigger PSU. I don't want to be spending as much as I did on the Ax1500i a while back but still want something will plenty of power. Any reccomendations please? Would need to be modular.

A good, gold rated, fully modular 1000w psu would be my choice and either of these would be my recommendation:-

My basket at Overclockers UK:

The Seasonic Focus Plus gold series needs no introduction on here as we have been recommending them since they launched. Seasonic finally launched a platform that competed with other manufacturers on price and they have not cut back on quality to achieve this. They have been getting consistantly high scoring reviews and all have a 10 year warranty. Another good point about these units are that they are very compact at only 140mm long.

The Antec is based on the Seasonic Focus Plus gold platform and the internals are very similar meaning that both are of equal quality. These also have a 10 year warranty but are bigger than the Seasonic at 160mm long. The downside is that colour. Why didn't they just keep them black?

The Superflower Leadex II series finally gave us a switch so that those annoyingly bright led's can be turned off. This improves on what was already a very good psu with some tweaks to the internals. Unfortunately Superflower still will not match other manufacturers long warranties and this has "only" 7 years warranty.

The BeQuiet Straight Power 11 is a excellent series of psu's (I have the 550w version). This doesn't have a hybrid fan mode but it does have a extremely quiet fan that remains quiet even under heavy loads. The big downside is that BeQuiet are super stingy with the warranty and only give 5 years on this range which is completely unacceptable at this level. It's a excellent psu but they need to back it up with a decent warranty.

It should be noted that at normal pricing the only one that would be in my list is the Seasonic Focus Plus 1000w. The others are normally £27+ more expensive and with the Seasonic being normally priced at £152.99 I fail to see any point in paying more money than what is one of the best psu ranges that you can buy. Paying any more gets you nothing extra and in the cases of the Superflower and BeQuiet actually get's you less warranty. If the BeQuiet had double it's warranty then I would be torn between that and the Seasonic but with how they currently stack up it has to be the Seasonic Focus Plus 1000w for me.

Thanks a lot mate, I was buying an Evga one but the seller has let me down today. I will defo take a look at these, thanks so much. Due to me using the Phanteks Primo the colour of the psu or lights would not matter as I keep the PSU hidden away at the back. Thanks mate.

Actually, before I do purchase one can I just add that my system has 9 solid state drives, 12 case fans, a highly overclocked 5960x @ 4.7 and all of the other listed hardware. Is 1000w still enough? Obviously ignore the listed PSU as I no longer use that, it gave up. I did see this but unsure if this would be any good if I do need more? https://www.overclockers.co.uk/seas...plus-gold-modular-power-supply-ca-05x-ss.html

Given the amount of stuff above a PSU calculator I tried gave a rough estimate of full load wattage being 990W!

Though I expect thats flat out worst case scenario. Think I would be erring on the side of caution and getting something beefier 1200w+

Oh damn ok, I thought that I may need more when I started looking at my rig. I mean, it works now using a Corsair HX850 but I did get a blue screen yesterday and I just feel I need more which is clearly obvious. Could you guys please recommend me some of the bigger power supplies? Thank you
I did use a PSU calculator and put in all of the voltages and stuff and it came out with 1120 for me. Obviously that isn't a true reading but still ,I just need to be sure.
Pastymuncher you do know what you are talking about I know that, and I have seen a lot of your posts and I know you are on the ball. I did however not explain my full setup, sorry about that.
Lets say I have £280 to spend and I would prefare not to go over that, although if I really don't need to spend that much ofcourse I won't. I know a lot about graphics cards, not so much about power supplies.
I have seen 4 that look alright.

And Gigabyte???? wtf

Would any of these suffice? And are any of these actually worthit?

That card at factory settings peaks at ~270W.
https://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/Gigabyte/GTX_1080_Ti_Xtreme_Gaming/28.html
So that would be max 540W/fair 500W average for two, assuming SLI actually fully works/scales for performance.

Then while full load consumption of CPU might be even around 200W, games aren't good at loading all cores/threads.
So more likely gaming draw for it would be ~100W.
Now 9 HDDs would consume over 50W for keeping themselves running, but for properly done SSDs ~5W should be enough for all of then idling.
So 200W over GPUs should be enough for gaming.

Her's one from wall pwoer consumption fot 1080 Ti SLI PC.

And those Asus cards are more hungrier than Gigabyte:

Thanks mate, so you think 1000w is plenty then?

Don't forget that you tend to get maximum efficiency at the 50-60% mark, so if you're pushing the limits of the PSU you'll not be getting the full efficiency and burning more money.

Personally if you've got the money, which you say you have, and your spec is beefier than most users PC's then I'd get the biggest decent PSU I can find.

That Seasonic you linked to looks very nice, especially at the price it's on offer for.

I've just got myself the Bequiet Dark Power Pro 11 1000W PSU (it's Platinum rated as well) and it's built like a tank, heaviest PSU I've ever used, I can recommend you look at their range as well, especially the higher wattage models :)

Ok great, I was actually looking at the Be Quiets, they have some great features such as the rubber to stop any vibration noise. The fans on them are also great and the general builld is very impressive. After long consideration I am going to order this one https://www.overclockers.co.uk/be-q...-platinum-modular-power-supply-ca-093-bq.html Even though the likelyhood is I am not going to need this much wattage. I just know that I can never stop buying stuff and the chance of me adding more to this system is pretty damn high, should be set for quite some time I guess. I appreciate all of the advice in here and I am very grateful that you guys have helped me out, thanks a lot. I will post back when I am up and running (Prob on the weekend as I know Ocuk defo would have delivered by then).

Drop of efficiency happens lot more dramatically at low loads:
Every PSU runs clearly more efficiently even at 100% load than 10% load.
And PCs spend most of the time in desktop/web surfing etc use, which don't cause really any load.

That BeQuiet needs basically 100W load to reach 85% efficiency (@European mains voltage, US low voltage worser) with extra ~18W turned to heat.
Marketing never tells that when advertising efficiency numbers...

Ok great, I was actually looking at the Be Quiets, they have some great features such as the rubber to stop any vibration noise.
Only thing to actually need that rubber thingy (besides sloppy hurried work in installing it) would be bad fan.
Good fans don't vibrate.
But darn, only 5 year warranty for super luxury priced PSU...
BeQuiet must be counting on brand blindless.

I mean 12 year warranty Seasonic Prime is 25+% cheaper!

I got my wattage figures from looking at 1080ti reviews all of which use overclocked X99 platforms and power draw at the wall varied from 656-752w with the cards overclocked as well.

You are out of your mind with regards to your choice of psu. BeQuiets new psu's are decent but they are massively overpriced and they only give a tight fisted 5 year warranty. With their rivals offering 7 and 10 years for much cheaper but equally good and sometimes better units 5 years is completely unacceptable.

If you really want a 1200w psu then at least go for one that the manufacturer has faith in by backing it up with a decent warranty such as the Seasonic Prime that EsaT suggested above.
