Hi I’ve just upgraded and have put in a psu a freind gave me, problem is the hdd wasn’t found in the bios, I then notice the hdd wasn’t powering up so tried in a different pc and still nothing, i then took a hdd that worked from the other pc and connected to mine and same thing happened it wasn’t powering up then re connected it in the pc it had worked and it then didn’t power up

Can a psu do this?

Was using the pc like normal just without a hdd connected so I would assume I’ve had a lucky escape and the rest of pc is ok?!

Badly failing PSU can kill all PC parts, including attempting to burn the case.

But over the spec voltage should start killing also other things than HDDs.
Unless there's spike just enough to burn some protection components of HDD.
Though TVS diode should short itself and it would be more like case of blown/burned fuse.
