It's a real killer for him, bet he never wastes time again though!

Was on an RFU safeguarding course today, starting to coach at u7s. I'll actually be able to run around tomorrow too, since there was no game today for me!

Figure if I can do some coaching, and actually get somewhere with it, then when I actually realise it's really silly to keep playing ;) I can stay in the game quite easily.
Good man :)

I would love to take up coaching, problem is with my work (NHS) and doing lots of shiftwork and a lot of nights there (mostly nights). It makes it quite difficult to commit to coaching.

Depending on how far you want to go, I suspect most clubs would be grateful for anyone who can turn up even on occasion (at least for age grade).

It was pouring down this morning, just before we set off I got an email saying that if people don't want to come, then not to. We went anyway, the main coach was there with his son, and then more and more arrived, and the rain actually stopped. In the end we had 9 u7s and u6s! Amazing for the weather in the buildup, it would have been 10 had one of the parents left straightaway (I had to go to the clubroom to sort something out).

The problem is that if I do coaching, I want to be involved pretty much every week instead of showing up maybe once a month or so. I want to be really involved in getting the kids grow as players and see how their skills improve. Don't care too much about the weather though as the so called winters here is non-existent :D

Training tonight was good. Feel a lot more alive than I have recently (no game saturday helped). Scrum practice on the machine was a lot better in terms of being comfortable in my setup, live will obviously be different. It went so well, we ended up ripping the machine out of the wooden sleepers that it's bolted onto! Guess that means we were driving up a bit much!

Really tough game on saturday, but we ended up winning, they had a brutal pack, but felt far more comfortable in the scrums. Went back a bit, but we were getting outpushed. Held a few, and even got the nudge on once or twice.

Feeling pretty battered now though, thumb got bent right back early on, and now from the knuckle of the index finger, and along the lifeline of the hand (and everything inside to the thumb) is coming up purple :D, got most the motion back in it now though. Shoulder isn't great either, but also feeling like it's slowly getting better.

My boy was at a festival on sunday, and that was a lot of fun too, really pleased with how the boys did, considering they've only just started playing.

Some folks suggested that I do a blog on getting back into it, so I have. It's not upto date yet, but there's a fair few entries, if anyone is interested.

Feeling rather broken today! Shoulder is very uncomfortable, couldn't finish the match. Got a week off, then a fixture that i may not take part in, then a month off basically, so I've got plenty of healing time now i hope.

Ah that sucks. Make sure you keep your shoulder moving and concentrate on rotator cuff exercises. I think the mobility thread on here has some decent advice.

I think if I do end up playing again I’m going to retire from the front row!

Pfff you can’t retire from front row until you retire full stop. You will always be called upon as somebody who can play as a front row specialist when someone else’s injury means you play as front row or the game is off.

Heartbreak for Sam Underhill, but I don't think England can be too disappointed with the result. That's the first time in ages that I've seen England come out the blocks firing on all cylinders rather than playing to the opposition's standard and waiting for the game to come to them. To go down by 1 point to the All Blacks after such a disappointing run of form is a pretty amazing turnaround considering the lack of international experience available for selection currently. I honestly thought it was going to be a pumping.

Sam Underhill had a man of the match performance and that try would have sealed it. I didn't think Lawes was offside (he also had a very good game), but then I'm very biased! With the try being awarded on the field and the on field referee being right next to the infringement and allowing the play to continue, I think it's unfair that this was reviewed by the TMO. Then again, England lost 3 lineouts in a row, spurned an easy chance at the posts and Farrell missed a conversion (albeit a difficult one).

Encouraging signs from England.

I think Lawes was offside, but if Underhill hadn't scored from it, it would never have been called.

We blew that with our errors.

Lawes was onside, but I've had to find a YouTube video with a grid and go frame by frame to make my decision. The offside lines for the ruck were made by the NZ player at the front and the NZ player at the back. Going frame by frame, and using the grid lines, Lawes is onside...
  • Lawes starts in an onside position, behind the offside line created by Ford in the tackle (Law 14.10)
  • In reality, a ruck is not formed, because no England player on his feet engages a NZ player on his feet over the ball.
  • If we do entertain the idea that a ruck has formed, ball moves to the back of the "ruck".
  • NZ at back moves leg forward clearing the ball from the ruck. The ruck is now over. Lawes still onside, behind the foot of the player in the ruck closest to his tryline (Law 15.4)
  • NZ at front moves foot forwards (this would move the offside line forward and make Lawes offside if the ball was still in the ruck, but it is not)
  • scrumhalf lifts the ball from the ground
  • England 18 puts hand on NZ player at front of ruck (some people saying this further extends the ruck, but the ball is already out)
  • then Lawes moves forward to charge down.

What's more, if a decision is this tight, then benefit of the doubt should be applied. Also, the referee was standing right next to Lawes telling him that he was onside... you can't tell a player they are onside and then penalise them for offside unless it is very clear and obvious that circumstances had changed (note that the TMO only said Lawes was offside... he didn't give any explanation which player was setting the offside line).

Changing topic, good to hear you are getting into age-grade rugby... I've been coaching and refereeing since u7, now with u12, so shout if you have any questions.
