Not sure if it's a bug or something not working correctly but just played a game as Persia and the Immortal wouldn't melee, despite still being tagged as a melee unit and having the melee unit promotion tree. Annoyingly, it meant I couldn't take cities with it and it ended up being an expensive (and very slight) upgrade to the Archer.

Seems doubly weird as you can upgrade the Warrior to it which is going melee unit to ranged.

You can guarantee it will be a bug Civ games have a lot of them

So a lot has changed since i last posted here.

I'm really not happy with the way the game now

Guvenors are fairly crap after their 2nd nerf. A city on the borders needs one because of the other crap mechanic Loyalty. (it sounded really fun to begin with) but other than that its just a very tiny bit of fluff that mostly has no effect on the game.

Loyalty. Now its a complete joke/ball ache to attack the enemy and take a city. It got to the point where destroying cities is just more efficient and less of a complete ball ache boring time sink. I know there are government and other perks to help with this but its still "really bloody dull" to take a city and have it flip-flop between loyalties for a decent amount of turns. It slows the game down to boring levels.

Im having more and more games where i just give up because its going to not be fun splating an enemy civ, not like it used to be at least.

I think the games become very too specialised, you can no longer really play for fun and just jack of all trade to the end and have fun. Now to me at least it fells like you need to really dedicate yourself to a victory condition and go for it.

Maybe that's good? But its not always what i want from a game of civ, sometimes i just wanna seal club and stomp people.
I was just playing a game me and the GF vs 4 other paired up Emporer civs. its now 1850AD nothing really happened ive only got 5 cities and ive been at war for about 1h of game play and nothing has really happened? its just got dry.

I was really tired when I typed this.

The problem with the Civ games is that they are never finished until the last expansion pack and then they do a big bug fix before moving on to the next edition with more lovely graphics - sound and even more crap AI.

As I have over 500 hours on Civ 6 and the missus has over 700 hours on Civ 6, we're both interested in the new expansion, although the 34.99 price tag is high for an expansion. Nevertheless, we will both get another 100 hours out of it I expect :)

I don't generally mind paying for the Civ expansions; they're meaty things. But I've "only" racked up 81 hours on Civ VI (compared to 306+ on Civ V, and god knows how many in the versions before), so I think I'll hold off on this one until I've seen a bit more about it.

AI improvements would be nice, always been one of the series weaker aspects. Some may wonder how my missus and I have racked up so many hundreds of hours in the game, the reason is that we only play multiplayer, on giant maps, on Marathon game length. When played with 8 human players on those settings , its utterly superb. Each game we play takes us months to play through but we have reliable people to play with but of course not everyone has that.

I'd return to this but it'd still be as ghastly as I remember. Suppose I should be thanking Firaxes really, because if it wasn't for this abomination I'd never of discovered Paradox's games.

I play both, the Civ games when I want something turn based, slightly more shallow and with more animated combat and the Paradox games when I want something more real time and deeper. I find the two series of games compliment quite well to fulfill all my strategy needs :)

Yes it is and it would not take much effort to fix some of the really stupid things that the game AI loves to do, you do not need the best AI game programmers on the development team to do that.

After watching a video with the devs, the expansion supposedly does have AI improvements, I guess only time will tell just how much the "improvement" is.

5 is the best, with all expansions...
Personally, after playing EU4 and CK2, Civ is a shallow pile of poo.... And played countless hours from Civ 2 to later Civ games (inc 6, BE, Col, ).

and this is why iv about had it with civ games, buy a game but to get the AI fixed you gotta buy the expansions, im sorry the AI is a core part of the game and should be fixed in patches!! not by milking people of more money.

Honestly, just go back to Alpha Centauri.
No Civ game holds a patch on it, and I'm always amused to see another Civ expansion re-introducing things that we had in 1997....

Still no deformable terrain either.

Anytime I see this game referenced I just think of the voiceover "Nutrient Resouces". Totally agree though. I was just thinking why on earth we don't have a new Alpha Centauri, then I remembered they gave us that forgettable Beyond Earth. Quite literally forgettable.

Wow that thing even got an expansion? LOL. All these noobs in the world ruining my childhood franchise.

I probably won't buy Civilization VI until there is a GOTY version or similar with all expansions included. Civilization V has broken AI diplomacy (in multiplayer), so my girlfriend and are I are still stuck playing multiplayer Civilization IV Beyond the Sword!
