Has your niece expressed a preference for what type of head she would like on the tripod? Ball head, 3 way?

Manfrotto make some good tripods, here are some entry level ones you may wish to consider which are in your price range:-
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Manfrotto-...3296&sr=1-2-catcorr&keywords=manfrotto+tripod
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Manfrotto-...3296&sr=1-3-catcorr&keywords=manfrotto+tripod
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Manfrotto-...3296&sr=1-9-catcorr&keywords=manfrotto+tripod

Plenty of other brands out there, Benro spring to mind. I don't have a Canon camera, but I suspect a shutter release will cost you somewhere in the region of £5 - £20, people will probably ask you if you want a wireless or wired shutter release.

Nice one, that is a relief as I noticed the manfrotto compact advanced tripod last night on the rainforest and picked it up for £41. :)
