Too thick to play this.
I remember buying X2 years ago and back then I had a lot time to play games and after about 30mins I was ready to uninstall it. The problem was when I was younger Elite was my favorite game on my Amiga and I badly wanted a modern equivalent and this was a close at it got so I created an account on the Egosoft forums and spent a lot of time readying user guides, tips, advice on the best strategies to make money and get the most out of the game. The next day I loaded it up again and tried a few simple things like trading some energy cells, locating a disused cargo ship which I claimed and sent for repairs, learned how to trade remotely, used the money to buy satellites so I could get real time information from different systems which would make trading a lot easier. After a day or two I had enough money to buy my first station and soon after that I created my own factory loop.

This is the thing about the X games....

On the surface, they look like games about flying around in space ships shooting things and trading stuff. And yes, they are games about that.

But I always found the real games were:
a) bumbling around learning the game, working out the systems, discovering how to do things, and uncovering the complexities under the bonnet
b) standing/sitting on the bridge of a giant, mostly stationary carrier (micro-) managing a fleet of ships or an empire of traders.

These two 'games' bookend the pew pew fluff in the middle.

I "get" the game but Jesus it's hard to figure stuff out. I've bought a scout ship and hired someone to pilot it for a mission. They have to pick up 3 antimatter cells and fly into a void.

So far I've managed to get them to fly to a station that have some I've already paid for but they can only pick up one so I'm at an end on what to do apart from buy a bigger ship.

This really needs a decent tutorial as you go along.

You may well need a bigger ship. To be fair it does say that you need to play the game a bit first before progressing with that mission.

He's basically saying X2 is an awesome game, you just need to apply yourself to see it.

I remember sending my Mammoth into Paranid Space to pick up about 30 new ships (Paranid were the fastest) for my growing trade empire. It was brilliant the way I could remotely buy ships and send them to my Mammoth and then send my Mammoth back to my space all using the command software from half way across the galaxy.

It is one of those games where it takes a bit of effort to get into, but is extremely satisfying when you manage to grasp it and build an empire.

I remember trading energy cells in X3 in order to afford my first universal trader. Took a good few hours!

I am at the point now where I can just command my small empire from the player HQ.

Liking this game so far, such a steep learning curve :D (even tho I remember playing X3)

Seems like the developers are actually interested in improving the game looking at how quickly patches are coming out :)

Also maybe of interest: interview with ‎Bernd, CEO of Egosoft on sgj podcast
Quite long but pretty interesting :)
Also notes ref interview on reddit

About 12 hours in, just bought a shiny new freighter with half my cash, sent it on it's first trade run and the Xenon blew it up! I guess we need escorts now lol

The hardest bit to get used to is the right click context menu, it sounds simple and intuitive but it took me a while to really figure it out.
Selecting one of my fleet then right clicking on empty space gives me a set of options. Right clicking on a station another set and so on.

Still getting a great kick out of this even with all the patchong going on I'm not rushing to the end game so can enjoy all the snazzy new bits.
I had a sneak peek at a sector map and found loads of extra sectors I'd never visited and having watched that 1.5 - 2.0 video I also realise the sectors are bigger than they seem as you can keep on going when you reach what I thought was the edge...and still find stuff

It is great that after the initial few hours there are lots of ways to play this. You can leave it run while you do other things, stand on a station and manage your empire, or jump in a ship and do missions or explore. So much better than rebirth.

I do miss jump drives though - both the effect and also if one of my ships is attacked I can’t get to it quickly and it can’t escape easily.

I am impressed with how quickly they have fixed this and am looking forward to future updates/additions/DLC.
