Out of curiosity, put windows 10 performance setting to balanced and see if the problem returns. It might prove that the balanced setting was to blame. I've tried it on mine but doesn't seem to make a difference but it could be game sensitive.

I tried with Assassins creed as well and its the same story, clocks drop when usage drops but pick back up whereas before they would just stay low even if usage increased. Will test for you let you know

Cheers for that, that'll confirm summat thats had me wondering for a while. Incidentally, what is your gpu clock speed while gaming /benching? It shpould be around 1630mhz.

Spoke too soon.Just had a big battle and towards the end the HBM speed plummets from 1045mhz to 167mhz resulting in 35fps and a very angry and frustrated me. I dont understand whats happening, the temps are all fine, as im typing this GPU usage is pegged at 100% and 1323mhz.
Im tired of the crap and RMAing tommorow

EDIT : Going to try one last thing.Snappy driver says there is a more optimal but older driver for the card so im going to install that and see what happens. If it dont work i will RMA this tragedy

Edit to the above: That didnt work, bye bye Vega64 you are being RMA`d

When I play Assassin's Creed Odyssey I get some big FPS drops now and again with the Vega 64. I have not really paid much attention to the running stats of the card itself, but rather just restarted the PC and it then works fine when starting the game up again. I can take a closer look, as by the sounds of it, the issue is similar.

The issue does not effect any other games.

Hi Everyone. Hmm, so I ordered parts for a new build today and went for a Gigabyte Vega 64 as the price seemed great, and the one review I looked at online seemed good. I was in a rush and don't usually make decisions this quickly but looking through this thread now it doesn't seem to be the most loved of cards... Have I made a terrible mistake? I don't really want to pay lots extra, but maybe I would have been better off going for a PowerColor 56 or something like that?

I bought my Gigabyte Vega 64 OC about five days ago and had been waiting for a price drop. It gets competitive benchmark scores to anything I'm seeing with other Vega 64 cards and I've been researching this months and tuning for days now. I'm generally getting scores competitive or better than the GTX 1080 on most tests. Undervolt and Overclock works great. It' not noisy, I'm not seeing temps get out of control and frankly, my RX 480 ran way hotter.

So the bad rap on this card is way overdone imo. There were some initial bios problems that Gigabyte corrected and many reviews were done on the initial bios. Also, the community hasn't done a good job of conveying the need to undervolt on these cards. I'm surprised how much better scores are and improved stability as well. Many professional Vega 64 Reviews don't even mention the advantage. I'm kind of glad this card has been trashed because I picked up my for $450 and couldn't be happier.

Please do it would help a lot. Pay attention to core and memory clocks using HWINFO and show graph option for those 2 fileds.Leave HWINFO running in the backround and play the game, when it starts to slow down alt+tab out and check HWINFO.If HBM and core clock is unusualy low like below 800 and a 1400 then you are having the same issue I am having.I have started the RMA process for my card but it might be driver related so I dont think Im going to get a new card or refund.

Could still be something else going on with your system. I've spent many hours in AC: Odyssey (5820K, Red Devil Vega 64) as has my housemate (9900K, ref Vega 64) and we have not experienced any such issues across a number of drivers and game updates. Don't think we've ran it with the very latest Adrenalin drivers, but I'd be surprised if they caused issues. We both finished the game so until we pick up some DLC we're not going to "test" any further for the time being.

No worries, I've already sent my Vega 64 off as an RMA

Yeah, reviewers haven't done well at spotting what is basically a need for Vega to be undervolted (but to be fair, reviewers tend to test cards at stock plus sometimes again with an overclock), and AMD haven't done a good job tuning it better as it comes out of the box. They're great cards but unless you have an overkill of cooling (e.g. open loop) it really benefits from an undervolt, and even with plenty of cooling it can help to stay in the power budget available to the card.

I would disagree the community hasn't been conveying the need to undervolt.

You're right about the community conveying the need to undervolt these cards, but I think some of the more well known site, LLTT, GN, TD, etc need to revisit and check out undervolting. One site actually did a Vega 64 mod where they could increase the power draw I believe, not decrease it, to try and gain more overclock. I also saw another site that really had a downer on the gigabyte V 64 due to noise, power draw, and heat and generally lacklustre performance and reckoned he couldn't recommend the card at all.
None of these sites hardly mentioned under volting iirc.

Decided to buy this for my Vega 64 rig.

S0MXbjN.png

Done some testing with the Vega 64 a little while ago. That monitor there is 240hz 1080p Freesync. I decided to set Doom to 1080p ultra, with FXAA running Vulkan. It stayed jammed at 200 FPS lmao. Can't wait to get the monitor in, game is sick running that fast.

Just to avoid any confusion. I have three rigs. One is this with a XP

nshVss9.jpg

Which is still a WIP. That is on a 32" Freesync 70hz monitor. Then I have/had this set up as well.

OGLqWoY.jpg

Which I am replacing with my Vega 64 rig (old rig has a Fury X in) and the new 25".

Oh, and BF1 rocks on a Vega. Easily hitting the 70hz on 1440p ultra.

I wasn't referring to THIS overclockers forum but rather the professional tech review community, those writing published reviews. That said, it seems that most recommendations here for undervolting for speed and stability have come only in the past few months. Most owners have been winging it without a lot of direction. I'll place a lot of the blame on AMD for not tuning Radeon out of the box a little better for the VEGA cards. Even the current Radeon settings, Power Save, Balanced, Turbo and the manual click button options aren't very good. I ran Time Spy yesterday with each of the options and barely noticed a difference between them. Only when I manually undervolted, did the card start to show it's true colors.

Totally agree with you there. It makes me wonder why AMD set the default voltages so high in the first place, and this is not the first time this has ocurred. Both the Fury/Furyx/and to some degree the, the Nano all benefited from undervolting, and that was yonks ago, so you think they might have noticed what was going with their products.
And as for these latest drivers, these auto options are a complete farce, I'm all for doing yourself, but what if someone buys the card, and attempts to use these options and runs into problems, they haven't got a cat in hells chance of sorting it on their own, unless they come onto a site like this where you can least suffer with a load of others with the same prob, but get it solved eventually.

Questions for VEGA owners:
I have a Freesync monitor, not the newer v2 Freesync. Should I use enhanced sync along with AMD Freesync with my Vega 64? Has anyone done any benchmarks on differences?

Virtual Super Resolution: Turn this on or off? I have a 4K monitor.

Any advice much appreciated.

The only difference between V1 and V2 Freesync is V2 supports HDR.

As for Enhanced Sync, Turn it on, Yes you will go outside your Freesync window, When going higher than your monitors refresh rate, But it will give you faster response times, Lower latency etc... and when the frames drop back down to the Freesync range, Usually 30/48Hz to 100/144Hz, Freesync will take over.

VSR is nice for screenshots :p

If you were to buy a Vega 64 now, which one would you buy and why?

I see a lot have swayed towards the Sapphire in TROH!

I have a sapphire vega64 LC. I was swayed towards it purely because of word of mouth here and on Reddit Vs other options, plus they only make Amd cards unlike other companies.
