Well that’s about the response I was expecting! For info I’m currently running an ancient hd7870xt which is still working and running what I ask it to but I was looking at a vega 64 in the Black Friday deals, now I’m thinking I’ll wait and see what might be available later this year. Vega pricing isn’t likely to go up so either way i should be ok.

I will be watching the specialist press on January 9th though. Just in case!

And the reason that I was worried about the validity of the pricing was basically the “new” 590. If you know your gonna announce something like that then why bother to release a rebranded card for a price like that... just didn’t make sense to me. If they do announce the rx 3080 at £250 though it might very well be the first tome that I actually preorder hardware!

The rumours are nonsense, as simple as that.
Navi wont be launched at CES> AMD will be talking about 7nm Ryzen, 7nm Vega for compute, the new Polaris 590. They might give a slight hint of future 7nm Navi cards, but the launch wont be until after summer.

AMD just released a Polaris 590 on 12nm. They will want that to have a 9-12 month life span minimum, and that is exactly the performance range Navi is going after.
Not this nonsense again seriously, the evidence is in the keynote. It's in black and white. Not the navi part but the part where you mention 7nm compute. They said GAMING. Whilst I agree they won't launch yet, they will likely discuss it.

The speculation for why the 590 exists is that AMD's long suffering exclusive partners were desperate to have something 'new' to sell over the Christmas period that comprehensively beat the GTX 1060. Cost to manufacture remains the same as other Polaris cards hence the price.

Interesting, and sounds plausible. It seemed odd to me that Polaris 30 was 1 single product, not a full RX 600 family, especially as the RX 3060 as leaked would single-handedly render the entire Polaris line redundant (and a RX 3050 at $99 would seal the deal).

There's nothing stopping AMD releasing a card at $299 that would be priced at $649 by Nvidia.

Of course they can do it. Look at the 4850 and 4870.

One thing AMD have always had to do is literally double the performance of their competitors and halve the price to stand any chance of getting any mindshare. Look at Ryzen. The 1700 was three times cheaper than the CPU it was as good as (the 6900k). And even then people *still* bought Intel.

IIRC when the 470 and 480 launched they ended up selling for less than you could buy a used 970 or 980 for. Might not have put a dent in Nvidia's high end, but at least it made GPUs affordable to all.

It's just some people's perceptions. Some people wont shop at primark because they see it as cheap crap. But ive often been to topman, riverisland, JD and all other shops. Bought clothing that's not lasted as long as primark clothing. So i tend to get all underwear and basics from primark and jeans, coats ill get else somewhere else because i prefer other makes such as levi jeans etc. People's perceptions seem to be driven by other people's opinions rather than looking at the whole picture and deciding. Then others are just die hard fans of brands that support them regardless.

Lol at the people saying the rumours are nonsense. Of course the current price points will be replaced eventually. It has to happen sooner or later otherwise a graphics card will cost as much as a new BMW in 10 years.

Nvidia just tried to take the **** this gen due to zero competition.

£250 for 1080/vega 64 performance next year sounds eminently possible. In fact I completely expect it.

Exactly. The 4850 and 4870 kept the prices of Nvidia down, as the 9800GT and GTX were very reasonably priced (as was the replacement, the GTS 250). I have no reason to think these will be expensive cards. The last reasonably cheap Nvidia card was the GTX 670. Since then they've kinda had the lead everywhere, aside from the very high end when the 290 and 290x came out. If AMD can replace their huge honking cores with small diamond shaped ones (to get more out of a wafer) then there is no reason they can't just knock out a cheap GPU like they did with the 470 and 480 that performs well.

Like you say, zero competition, but AMD must be able to achieve 1070 and 1080 performance at some stage on cheap dies or we may as well all go home. But yeah, jokes aside, Nvidia have been holding back for ages so it's well within the realms of possibility that AMD can make GPUs as fast as those, given they were small dies and inexpensive for Nvidia all that time ago.

We just totally, totally got over charged for them due to the lack of competition. The last even remotely reasonably priced mid range GPUS from Nvidia? the 970 and 980 and all because the 290 and 290x were still competitive (even if they were barbecues.)

Expect new cards to come in at the same performance / £ as the old cards, or slightly worse. That's pretty much how its been recently. expecting more is setting yourself up for disappointment. In time, after the drivers mature, the newer cards will come out better though.

I love your optimism but I will show my ass on the town hall steps if that happens

But by that logic, gpu prices will just keep increasing in prices every year. Even the most die hard and rich pc gamers will think twice about paying £10k for a gpu!

The current price points WILL be replaced eventually with something much faster for the same money.

We will have vega 64/1080 performance for around £250 or less by the end of next year, I'm positive.

If we don't, the market will stagnate and die anyway.

How is it optimistic? GPU prices are grotesquely inflated and AMD have a golden opportunity to claim some major marketshare.

At this point in time, AMD are not Intel and Nvidia. They cannot afford to have the same mindset of low sales with huge margins, relying on fanbois and the ill-informed to gobble up stock. AMD can still make a significant profit through high sales and low margins, and pitching a Vega 64/GTX 1080 performing card at £250 will do just that.

Nvidia can't afford low sales volumes either really, as we see from their nose dived share prices. People aren't so loyal to the brand that they are willing to pay the stupid prices.

Hmm, there is the RX Vega 56 right now for £320.
We won't really feel that price reduction, what we need is RX Vega 64 +50% performance for £450 and RX Vega 64 +>80% performance for £575.

Well we're not getting it :p Vega 64 + 15% for £250 is your lot until Arcturus comes around, unless there really is some Big Navi coming too (as some of AdoredTV's sources indicate).
