Enjoyed this, not quite to the same level as the first which I found to be really quite refreshing for a Marvel movie.

Free Solo (for the second time). The footage is incredible. Alex is a seriously odd chap (and many similarities with me). His girlfriend is irritating. Documentary, thriller/horror (some of the scary scenes). Great film, maybe my favourite of 2018. 9/10.

Netflix's "Godzilla 3: The Planet Eater". Honestly, I don't know why I bothered. I'm a huge monster movie fan so loved the idea of this series but they're terrible IMHO. The first one started out OK but they got progressively worse and this final one was just wordy garbage. Nothing involving Kaiju actually happens until the last 30 minutes and then it's dull and serves as a backdrop to a load of pathetic pseudo-science rambling, pop psychology and mystical nonsense.
There is also something really 'off' about Godzilla in the films. He's just so slow, ponderous and, ultimately, boring.

First Man - 5/10 - Style over Substance for the most part with an accurate portrayal of a private man making for a dull movie. If you want a "good" NASA film watch "The Right Stuff" or "Apollo 13", both of which do a great job of mixing the technical with the personal, which is something First Man fails to do as, for me, it focuses far too heavily on the very private life of the man (which is fairly dull) at the exclusion of "how/why go to the moon" making it feel almost like they had to make it like a soap opera rather than a biography. The score was the best section of the movie for me while almost all technical accuracy was thrown out the window to make for more drama which was the biggest negative. Gosling did a good job portraying a very private man few actually knew well and his wife was well acted but the rest of the cast felt like filler, even when there should be huge emotional strings being pulled over their fate it's more Meh than Damn.

Operation Finale - 6/10 - I'd known of this mission (kidnap "final solution" architect Adolf Eichmann from 60's Argentina and make him stand trial in Israel) for a long while so I was surprised it hadn't been made into a film long before but I'm glad to see it has been now. The film is split into 3 uneven duartion sections, the setup - kidnap/interrogation - and escape, and the film spends just too long (for me anyway) in the interrogation phase taking up nearly 50% of the runtime. I get why this was done, as the interrogation where Eichmann's fake Argentine identity was broken down until he admitted his real identity, is supposed to be extremely dramatic but as he "broke" quite early on the drama is more surrounding his talks with the missions Leader as he justifies why he did what he did which is less "dramatic" and more "having a conversation".
This leaves the actual escape being over very quickly but it is very well filmed with the drama ratcheted up high, although it doesn't stick to the truth too tightly. However my most disappointing bit was that the "set-up", the intelligence operation to actually identify and track Eichmann was trimmed down to about 15mins when it is that part IRL which showed true ingenuity, detective work and bravery by a whole host of people - Mossad and Locals alike - yet it hardly gets much screentime.
As a film the acting from Ben Kingsley, Melanie Laurent and Oscar Isaac is very good and the locations, cinematography etc is fine but its that, for me, time spent on the "wrong" section which lets the film down more than it should do.

Agree, makes me feel queasy, a very good film.
I always think modern films* when filmed in Black and White, just have visual punch.

I saw it at Tyneside cinema. I think it's pretty much finished showing everywhere now.

A bittersweet story of the end of an era, as Laurel and Hardy struggle to keep their show going due the ravages of time and other influences.
An absolutely superb performance of the duo, both on the stage and off, with a good balance between the heartfelt and emotional scenes and their namesake humorous farce.
It really shows the pressures of the showbiz life, as well as how much comedy has changed since their time.

Me and the wife watched 'Teen Titans go! To the movies', it was on the top tens of two of the empire critics in their podcast review of 2018.
