Would an Intel i5 8300H hold back a Rtx2060 Laptop?

Ive just sent back a HP Omen i7 8750 GTX1060 laptop because of overheating and fan noise, i can get my hands on a new Dell G7 17" with a i5 8300h and the new RTX2060 gpu for £1169 with a discount, would this still be a noisy laptop when it comes to cooling down and do yo think the CPU would hold back the GPU? it would mostly be used for gaming.

Dell G7 17 Gaming Laptop
NVIDIA® GeForce® RTX2060
8th Generation Intel® Core™ i5 8300H Processor (Quad-Core, 8MB Cache, up to 4.0GHz w/ Turbo Boost)
Windows 10 Home 64bit
17.3" FHD (1920 x 1080) IPS 300-nits Display
8GB, 1x8GB, DDR4, 2400MHz
128GB M.2 PCIe NVMe Solid State Drive (Boot) + 1TB 5400 rpm 2.5" SATA Hard Drive (Storage)

opinions would be brilliant thanks

I don't know, it performs 20% faster than a 6700HQ and 10% faster than a 7700HQ, which were standard i7 cpus for laptops.
Has the same number of cores and threads as them too.

The standard now is a 8750H, but at a £1.2k pricepoint, I would say that is pretty good vfm.

Speaking as someone who paid £1.1k for his 6700HQ + 1060 Alienware a few years ago, which is still going strong.

Ultimately it boils down to if the games you play are cpu-focused or gpu-focused.

4 core 8 thread CPU with boost to 4GHz should be sufficient for gaming even being a laptop i5 for anything less than the highest tier of GPUs (slight caveat there the package design TDP might cause some throttling). Though not sure what is with the single stick of RAM as it is a dual channel capable CPU so that likely hits performance a bit.

I spoke to someone that was getting a 2070 max q laptop put together, when he told the company what he was upgrading from (a full 1060gtx laptop) they actually advised him not to upgrade, in their words it would be a sideways upgrade, the new rtx max q laptops that they put together have major thermal throttle issues and he would be no better off from what he owned. I'm saving to build my own desktop now anyway

2060 is similar to 1070. According to TheBottlenecker, there is a 8.45% average bottleneck - this is low, which means that should match together at least decently. However, as others have said, 8300H is on the lower side when compared to 8750H - seems like they are being cheap; would be concerned then about the build quality and the cooling, with you seemingly worried about the latter one given the prior experience.

OP, was it Omen 17t? I am considering it between GP/GE 73 with a 1060/1070.

I'm not going to lie, i dont understand what you mean by 17t? I'd love to answer your question if I understood what you meant

It's a model of HP Omen, 2018 one. Seems like it, given 8750H. Did it really overheat with just a 1060? Read plenty of good reviews about it and this seems unfortunate.

As to answer your original question, GP73 with 1060 and GL703 with 1060 are also great options, with the cooling better at the former!

Yeah it was the the latest one on their website 8750h 1060gtx, it was a good lappy, undervolted it ran nice, the fans wouldn't max out but was still too loud to be able to sit next to the Mrs and game and her watch tv, I sent it back within the 14 days and got my money back no questions asked, they sent me a call of duty black ops 4 code and I got about £20 worth of fortnite gear for free out of it so I can't grumble :D

I have one of the new Omen 15’s here at the moment with an i7 8750 and RTX 2060. Even with a decent under volt the CPU still hits 100.c and thermal throttles badly under gaming. The improved cooling tbh is useless and is loud.

Not going to be a very favourable review unless a repast drastically improves things but this should not need doing by the user.

I've seen a few laptop reviews lately where the 6-core models perform worse than the 4-core ones under sustained load due to thermal throttling.

This is precisely why I chose the i5 8300H when I configured my recently acquired Lenovo X1E. It's not an rtx machine, but the same principles apply. I've read so many accounts of overheating, over active fans, and thermal throttling with the i7 8750H that when I ordered I couldn't face the angst involved in trying to mitigate those things. I can report that my i5 runs nice and quiet, even more so following an undervolt. I have acquaintances with the i7 whose machines do not run well because of their thermal design. There is always an assumption that i7 is better than i5. In a desktop, sometimes (depending on your needs) but not necessarily in all laptops.

I do have some performance niggles though which I believe are tied to my 4k panel. At full resolution I find Adobe Lightroom slower to render images, to zoom, and when using the brush tool. Switching down to 1080p resolves that, but it's an annoyance.

Are the 8 series the same almost as the 7 series? I can see why thermal throttling is an issue if so my 7820K runs at 4.2GHz sustained but only in certain games and does reach 95 degrees, it'll throttle instantly to about 3.6GHz on some loads.
