Cheapest is https://letsencrypt.org/ (it's free)
but it's not the easiest. The certificates are only valid for 3 months so you need to reissue it often.
It'll also depend on your host and if they'll let you use your own certificate or not.

Another vote for Let's Encrypt can't get any cheaper than free.

Lets encrypt is good, also a good git hub project for using on windows servers too 
cheers for all the replies guys. Just done a bit of digging, I'm with Heart internet and they run on something called eXtend, they don't seem to offer Let's Encrypt support from what I can tell on the list? Free and simple would be marvellous though

As mentioned above, you could register with Cloudflare and have them run your site through SSL, which is free. Cloudflare are very good.
Alternatively you could just buy a cheap one, this one is only a fiver from namecheap and it's good for a year

Move away from Heart to a modern host who don't use a proprietary, limited control panel. It's easier than you think if you find a good new home!
Any and all cPanel hosts should be providing automatic SSLs - cPanel comes with the feature built-in through Comodo/Sectigo, but the provider can switch to Let's Encrypt instead. No differences between the two really except brand recognition but no visitor will ever know.

An SSL certificate usually costs around £10-£20 per year (if you're not using a free one). It wouldn't be difficult to find a hosting package + a certificate for less than the £50 that they want to charge you just to add a certificate.

Just checked I'm paying £42 a year for the hosting, didn't even include any databases but at the time I signed up then moaned and they stuck one on the account.
Nice one, I'll check them out. Got to be cheaper than 40 odd quid + the cert. I have a couple of domain names with heart, I guess it wouldn't be too complicated to move to a new host?
