do i need to update my Z77 Extreme4 bios

I have had this MB since new but have never updated its bios.

do i need to update it?

If it works as it should, I generally don't. BIOS updates are usually to fix bugs or for compatibility with newer hardware (CPUS, maybe RAM). Only time I have had to do it is the rare occasion I have bought a CPU that fits the existing motherboard.

the latest 3.00 beta bios updates the cpu microcode against spectre.
so you'll see a performance decrease
