Following on from another thread, what second hand gaming laptops are worth a look into?

It would just really be required to run older FPS games such as Battlefield 3/4, MW2 CS:Go etc.

My budget is as cheap as possible really as it will be left at work and probably bashed about a little.

Interesting about the Dell outlet although every dell I've known my parents to have has been a bit off.

Where do I acquire the code?

After a quick Google I found:

ASUS i5 8300H GTX 1050 256GB SSD FHD Gaming Laptop (£550)
Or

ASUS TUF FX505DY RX560X Gaming Laptop (£550)

Not the best but not bad. I would have thought they will play the games you are looking at.

Thanks for the recommendations. I would imagine they would easily play the games I mentioned above. They might struggle with more recent ones but not too worried about that.

I initially didn't look at Asus equipment due to bad experiences with other devices and reading on here that some people have had big problems with their customer support.

Out of the two listed, would you go for the Intel over the AMD? I've tried to find a comparison of the two but can't.

It's a hard one because I've been looking at getting one some time soon. The AMD one comes with free sync but I believe is slightly slower on graphics and cpu but from what I understand it's hardly much.

I think it comes down to design and if you want the lager slower drive and freesync or if you want the slightly fast (not much in it) one with less storage but an ssd but no gsync. I'm afraid I haven't gotten round to reading reviews for the intel one but remember they are now £550 not the £700+ price they reviewed them at so they they may be a harsh and what they say as I found this with the AMD one.

Excuse my ignorance but what exactly does freesync do?
I'll maybe have a good read through reviews of both but will be looking to buy in the next month or two anyway.
The Intel based one is basically identical to the Dell I mentioned above but not sure if the AMD would prove a bit better. Who knows.
The laptop itself would probably only be used 1/4 of the year for an hour or so every evening if that so that is why I don't really want to spend too much.

So still not made a decision on this however I initially to look for one with a 1050Ti card rather than a standard 1050 card. Max budget about £600-£650.
I bought a refurbed Acer predator helios 300 with i5-8300H and 1050Ti for £540 but since returned it as I felt I may get something a bit better.

It looks like I can get:
MSI GE62VR i7-7700HQ with 3Gb 1060 card for £605 Edit: Appears to have jumped to £665 now.
or
Dell G5 i5-8300H with 6Gb 1060 Max q card for £615

Both refurbed and with a two year warranty.
I've read the reviews and it appears the i5-8300h is a bit better CPU and many recommending the 6Gb max Q over the 3Gb 1060 despite the slightly lower clock speeds.

Any thoughts?

Get saving, better advice here than the HUKD :D

I still think despite it being a max Q it will be better due to the ram but there would be advantages for the 3gb for example clock speeds. I think possibly they both will have their pros and cons especially when loading textures into ram vs speed.

Hey Tipsy!! We meet again:D.
Yeah I think you could be right. I've been too indecisive about it.
I'm going to go and play about with some laptops when I get home tomorrow then probably decide to just chuck the cash in to a new desktop build.
Nearly pulled the trigger on that 1060 Helios last night for but £670 didn't in the end.

depends what you want and how new you want, plenty of i5/i7 laptops with gtx 950/960/970 to newer 1050 and the amd equivs for less than the cheapest 1050 based laptop brand new.

actually this will play those games you asked just fine and other older games you were looking at

My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £609.89 (includes shipping: £9.90)

i just saw an older msi apache pro on fb for £450 that has a i7 6700hq, 8gb ram, gtx 960m, 128gb ssd, 1tbh which for an example proves my point, however id say that ryzen laptop be better and worth the extra cost, so i think for used youd have to look at under 450 to make it worthwhile over new.

Hi exo,
Thanks for your input. At the minute I'm just going to hold off for now. It would mainly he for using at work and at the minute they keep moving me locations so will probably only buy once everything settles into a more normal location for me staying. It could be a number of months before I'm properly settled though.

I did nearly buy that when it was reduced at £480 but didn't bother.
I don't mind getting a better second hand unit but even the prices of them are quite high for what you get.

Still on the prowl after someone tried to scam me. Luckily picked up on it so awaiting a refund.
Would you say a Asus Strix GL502VS with i7-7700, 16GB Ram and 8GB 1070 for £850 (1 year warranty) worth it?
