Had exactly the same thing, previous tenant left, leaving various damage and managing agent said that they had given their notice and used the deposit for the last months rent.

New tenant moved in and paid 6 months in advance, but the managing agents are "holding" this as security, as they didn't pass all the credit checks.

Like I've been advised, check your contract to see if it mentions advanced payments. Unless this is a while ago? We're you told his credit checks weren't up to scratch?

Turns out my new tenant is self employed, that's the reason for the 6 months, his credit checks are all good. The fact this wasn't communicated with me is very poor.
