Agreed.

There's no guarantee the final books will be good either though.
Of course there isn't, but I can guarantee they won't feel as thrown together as Seasons 7 & 8, rushing from plot point to plot point and becoming an incoherent mess in the process. My point was more they could have made the journey better as they didn't have to worry about coming up with an ending, rather than the ending being inherently good because it came from GRRM.

Just wondering, do you hate/dislike the episodes in and of themselves or just the bigger picture when you piece them all together? Last two eps, I thought were good taken on their own. Three was a bit of a let down (albeit spectacular), two was really good and the first was a little average for me.
I think it's almost the inverse of the complaints you see during a normal season. Always getting muppets complaining nothing is happening, but when the seasons showpiece episode has aired the season as a whole is lauded by those same folk.

This season has been show piece after showpiece but without the filler that made it so rewarding.

It's hit an miss out of context. Some areas are improved like Jaime and Tyrion's conversation in episode 5 (Jaime gave up his honour to save the innocent and Tyrion shouldn't want his sister to survive) but other aspects get even worse. How is this small girl sneaking up on the NK, why does Varys think she's mad when all he has to go off is her looking sad at the feast? etc. Some issues don't change like the poor battle plan at WF and Rhaegals death.

Visually everything has been stunning. The acting has been the best it's ever been (outside of a few characters from the earlier seasons like Tywin and Oberyn), the music is incredible and the set design and CGI are Oscar worthy.

It would make an average but stunning standalone film series but it's a terrible final season of GoT.

Slightly off topic but can anyone remember a fantasy/sci-fi series that had a genuinely satisfying final season and conclusion?

I was wracking my brain trying to think of one. Lots came to mind that went seriously awry such as:

X-Files
Battlestar: Galactica
Lost

Even if you think about movies, like The Matrix trilogy and Lord of the Rings - I doubt there's many people who prefer 'Return of the King' or 'Revolutions' over the original.

DS9 was decent all the way through, but it didn't get really great until Season 3.

Blakes Seven, which had a gobsmacking finale.

Add Fringe to the list

I liked the ending of BSG.

Me too. I guess it's one of those endings that some will think was a decent conclusion, others, maybe not so much.

No idea about Lost, as it never appealed to me. I certainly agree with X-Files though; that was a really unsatisfying ending to season 9, which is what I'm assuming is being referring to. I guess that wasn't a complete surprise though, given how average the seasons 8 and 9 were.

As for LotR - A friend of mine thinks Return of the King is the best of them; but then, he's not really a fan of fantasy so much; more a fan of stuff with action and big battles..

As someone has already mentioned, Fringe had a good ending.

Does 4400 count? Technically it was cancelled rather than concluded but still I like how they wrapped it up.

The only ones I can think of that I wasn't disappointed by the endings were shows that were always a bit meh. Maybe that is where GoT falls apart (as well as the other shows mentioned like Fringe, X Files etc.) - we know it can be so good and so we have the expectation of it being that good right until the end. Maybe expectations excel what reality could ever be. The show is great, moves on to brilliant, moves on to amazing and we expect the amazing, expect the spectacular which just can't be lived up to.

As for GoT, I'm still enjoying it - character development is fast (faster than it should be) and the show has lost some of it's nuances that made it truely special but I'm still enjoying it. The fact we're only one episode away form it all being over and it is still open to who will be on the throne come the final credits excites me to want to watch the final episode.

Rewatched S1 to S7 recently, S1 very good but S2 onwards was quite boring and then Robb's campaign really dragged on.... Bran north of the wall also boring as was lots of people spending ages traveling places together. Nights watch stuff ok but Stanis just rocking up to defeat the Wildlings as bad as stuff people are QQing about in S8. Ramsay plot lines just a bit horror porn like Hostel etc. Danny stuff just a big time sink to wait to get her to Westeros with army which was so obviously going to happen the entire narrative of her journey pointless.... I could go on but I think people somehow view earlier Seasons much more favourably than than they should based on the hyper criticality of S8.

It was only a year or so back I watched them all again and I would disagree. Yes, the pace was slower, that's one of the comments on the last two seasons, how the pace changed, but the writing and story are amazing. So much better a second time through too. For me he first 4 seasons are incredible.

It the writing etc has always been **** why on earth is it so popular?.....

Who knows, why are the 50 shades of grey books so popular , despite being terribly written. In fact, imo Harry Potter is terribly written yet one of the best selling ever, same could actually be said of Star Wars which if you think about it - is pretty poorly acted and written. Why was It Follows so popular when I thought it was dire. Sadly, as with all things in life (books, music, tv/film) being commonly popular is not necessarily a sign of quality (and vice versa)
