When was the track built?
In 1215, sort of – that’s when Monaco was first established as a colony of Genoa.
When was its first Grand Prix?
It was 1929 when racing engines first reverberated around the Principality, after cigarette manufacturer Antony Noghes decided to organise a race with his pals from the Automobile Club de Monaco. The race was part of the calendar in the first year of the Formula 1 World Championship in 1950, and hasn’t been off it since 1955.
What’s the circuit like?
Incredibly narrow and totally iconic. Nelson Piquet memorably described driving around Monaco as “like riding a bicycle around your living room”… which is fair. Despite that, it’s a challenge that nearly all drivers love, forcing them to put their skills on the line and rewarding millimetric accuracy. Overtaking on the tight streets is harder, however, with the 2003 Grand Prix witnessing a grand total of zero passing moves!
Why go?
A holiday on the French Riviera, plus the chance to watch Formula 1 cars pounding past places where Monegasques usually go to buy a pint of milk? It really is as fun as it sounds. On top of that, the chance to walk the track after a day’s hard lapping – or even enjoy your dinner on it at one of the terrasse bars – is not to be missed.
Where is the best place to watch?
Assuming you can’t get into one of the overhanging apartment blocks around the circuit (or onto a boat) shoot for anything from Grandstands L to P, which are clustered around the Swimming Pool section of the track, and where drivers hurl their cars through the tight chicane at 200km/h. Or, for a more spectacular vista, try Grandstand B, overlooking the ritzy Casino Square.

As it's all about qualifying this weekend it's Ferrari or Red Bulls best chance of a win. If they can get pole they can just drive around at 2/3rds speed and still bring it home. Max does love to stick it in the barriers at unfortunate times here, though.

Ferrari seem to be struggling with slow speed corners, so I expect a Merc/RB fight for pole.

I wouldn't say it's a forgone conclusion, but from the S3 times in Spain, Ferrari are nowhere, Redbull are a little ahead of them and Mercedes are just in another class. Sadly, Barcelona S3 is the closest to Monaco we have to compare up to this point. The difference is they will be piling on the downforce rather than the balancing act they had to do in Spain.

Red Bull ran a pretty huge wing already in Spain, so can they add much more? Ferrari need to have more, but be able to balance it out with the front wing. Mercedes need to calm the car down it's been nervous as hell throughout this year so far, don't want that at Monaco.

FIA just needs to ensure all the drain covers are welded/bolted down...

How can I watch this live in 1080p? Tried Now TV but it's a crappy 720p and looks utter trash. I dont want to subscribe to Sky.

Hmm. Will watch quali. If Hamilton gets pole, skip the race. If he qualifies second, watch the start. If he gets ahead at the start, switch off. If the positions remain unchanged into the first corner, switch off.

Given Barcelona S3, Mercedes should easily dominate here and will just play with the field.

Not legally, nowtv or sky are your only 2 options in the UK (beside a sat dish pointed at RTL).

Least entertaining race of the year for me. Annoyingly I'm out all day Saturday so will have to try and follow the qualifying on my phone. Indifferent about the race.
