I had a quick look on the store and you can get a Ryzen 2200G an ASUS PRIME B450M, Team Group Vulcan T-Force 8GB (2x4GB) DDR4 PC4-24000C16 3000MHz Dual Channel Kit, 120Gb SSD, a Kolink 400 Watt PSU and a micro ATX case for £278 delivered. After that it's a matter of getting an OS at which point I might suggest getting Linux it's a good O/S to learn and would benefit your kids going forwards if they ever decide to get a job in IT.

Key components. Ryzen 2200g or 2400g. 8GB (2x 4GB 3000Mhz). I probably recommend slightly larger SSD at 240GB. All that should be around the £300-350 mark when you add all the other components in.

That would work ^

I was hunting a good motherboard for APUs like the 2200G and found one:

That's if you want to use all the £350 budget + a bit. 16GB fast RAM which APU will benefit from as graphics memory, 500GB SSD, more reliable PSU. You'll find all the parts except for the motherboard and PSU at OcUK, and you should have free OcUK shipping by now, and the other two parts are free shipping as well.

Toyed with idea of 2400G and 8GB RAM instead. Thing is RAM prices may go up again, great price right now, and figured if you ever need something more powerful than 2200G you might want something better than 2400G anyway at that point.

yep i think its this one .. garbage, no SSD, no GPU, low amount of RAM

  • Everyday: All-rounder for work and play
  • Intel® Core™ i3-8100 Processor
  • RAM: 4 GB / Storage: 1 TB HDD
Yeah I think thats the one, I thought to myself if you wanted a i3 why not save the cash and get a used one, I could have got him one for about £60-£70 but he only wanted new and in the end he was unwilling to wait a few days.

Ohh dear take it back.

That machine is going to age really really badly, its already almost useless... 4gb ram in 2019... shouldn't be allowed on the shelves.
I would but its not my choice.
The guy I was building it for could not wait because it was a birthday present and he only told me the day before.

I just set it up for him and in total he paid £580 inc a 32 inch tv, they even sold him McAfee.

it turns out it was his wife's choice.

Absolutely. 4GB of RAM is a major drawback. 8GB should be minimum.

My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £311.23 (includes shipping: £12.30)

This is RAM usage with just Google Chrome working :D

at this budget its worth considering 2nd hand. Can get a older i5 office system around the £150 mark, then add a GPU, something like a 1050, maybe extra ram and an SSD if needed.

Wouldn't offer a great upgrade path, but does offer pretty good bang for your buck if you find half decent deals.

You don't need that garbage mcafee software - it'll make your slow hardware even slower.
Kinda, my point - but yep, Currys/Dell/Acer etc must be keeping McAfee afloat with their advertising and spiel.

Just Googled McAfee price - jesus! - he could have had the 2400G.
