Car just threw up an message “alarm system service required”. Google suggests the siren is gone and the battery has likely gone or leaked and thus corroded the PCB.

£140 part for the kit plus labour coming up.

Just get the unit out and replace the battery, it's a NiCad, can be had online for £8.

Siren module is under the wiper scuttle if I remember correctly. Did one last year on a C70, should be the same on yours.

So this week, for the first time in over a year since owning my Golf, I decided to try the DSG box in Sport mode. I think it's actually more economical around town because it holds on to the gears longer, thus leaving it in 2-cylinder mode for longer.
D just changes the gear up ASAP, which means the revs are too low for 2-cylinder mode. Madness.
It's also much more responsive.

/facepalm

Put the Mk1 TT in for its first MOT under my ownership. Failed for a snapped xenon headlight auto-levelling arm/sensor on the rear end. Shame the part is £90! No advisories though, just the unforseen part :(

Fingers crossed thats been the cause of the slight vibration I occasionally get from the rear when going over larger speed bumps!

Ouch. The ones on my car are just basic looking little plastic arms that look like something out of a photocopier.

Not to the car exactly, but the key. Since my original key had been dropped countless times and was dented/scratched/scuffed, I bought a replacement shell and BMW badge then gutswapped it. The BMW badge sticker isn't perfect, but it's still better than the old one was:

Yep, just swapped the internals over. Just had to go at the old key fob with a stanley blade since the two halves were glued together.

However, the key blade on the new one has the silver bit at the top whereas the old one is just black. It isn't too bad having to use the black one, but I might try to get the silver blade cut at some point. Does anyone know of anywhere I could get that done? I remember when I took the emergency key blade and a blank blade to Timpson they couldn't do it so obviously needs to be somewhere a bit more specialised :)

I've fixed a levelling sensor like that before (albeit only intended to be temporary). I just made up a brace, as it has snapped in the middle there was reasonable space at both sides to secure

Dropped the Jetta off at VW for a clutch pack replacement this morning. I could probably do it myself without much bother, but losing a bank holiday weekend just isn't with it

Large tub of vaseline at the ready.
