The 3800x nearly doubles the watt for 100mhz....looks like maybe these zen 2 chips will be at there limit in overcloking...

That's not necissarily what the TDP means. Consider the fact that the higher clocked 12 core is also 105W it makes no sense that the 3800X will need all that thermal headroom. All it means is that the 3800X needs a bit more cooling than can be provided by a 65W heatsink, the actual TDP can be anything between 65-105, and is probably closer to the 65 than the 105.

But it does mean the 3700X will be hitting thermal limits and throttling/not boosting anywhere near as much.

It might even be that the 3600X ends up being better than the 3700X in some games!

Well I'm a bit underwhelmed. Prices are higher than expected and lack of big core options...
Not waded through in detail but I'm hoping the 12 core is released straight away and is faster in gaming.

Let's get a few things in perspective. Lisa only announced 3 SKU's this morning, the 3700x, 3800x and the 3900x. Obviously there will be more SKU's added as time moves on, there could be more SKU's added in a few weeks time.
As for prices, the 3800x is aimed to compete with the 9900K. A 9900K is priced at £500 from our hosts and the 3800x is priced at $399 (£314). Tell me what is so underwhelming ?

I went from a 5960X to a 8086K and I've seen large improvements, mainly due to the clock speed. I'm holding out for the 16 core.
Ahh, at what resolution? I'm at 4K 1080Ti SLI and apart from Arma 3 everything is GPU limited. It's only Arma 3 where I can really see room for improvement and I know 8086K/9900K really race
ahead in it but overall I'm struggling to see a need to upgrade. OK I've played Arma 3 over 5000 hours so it's really the only game I spend time on but I'm pretty sure I'll be limited by server speed
rather than CPU although one CPU core is consistently maxed/nearly 100% so I guess I would see an uplift.

Technically they announced 5 SKU's, Lisa only talked about 3 though. The Ryzen 5 details were put up on the AMD site:

Exactly, I fail to see what is underwhelming?

Very interesting. Not sure what to make of it but here's my two cents:

Leaks were somewhat true, the clock speeds were accurate, but the lineup/processor name they belonged to was off. Seems as if AMD pushed down the apparent lineup by a step or 2. IPC gain was accurate in it being around 15%, but not sure if the clock speed will hit 5ghz, unless there are more chips to be released. I mean only 3 chips have been introduced, and all 3 were on the leaks (with different names) so its still entirely possible to see the other chips get released over time.

Not sure if we'll see a 16c mainstream chip yet as the Ryzen 9 seems to be the 12c and 7 is still 8c. Will need to wait on benchmarks and overclockimg ability to see the true performamce.

Pricing was the thing that was way off. In a way, the leaked prices did seem way off but it was to be expected that it was way too good to be true.

Now we just wait for other chips to be released by AMD and see the naming convention.

It won’t beat the 9900ks ....

Oh it will. Single thread IPC increased by ~15%. The 3900X single core perf will be equal or greater than the 9900K at 5 GHz. Multi thread IPC for AMD is a couple of percent better than the single thread IPC, so it will be right near the 9900KS with 8 core workloads, even with the 4.3/4.4 base clock. Of course the four extra cores and eight extra threads of the 3900X will drive home the advantage even further, meaning that in truly multithreaded workloads the 9900KS won't stand a chance even if it was at 6GHz.

a bit disingenuous to compare the prices like that when you know as well as i do that it'll be a 1:1 $ to £ conversion. 3800x is likely going to be £350-400 (more if there's retailer gouging).

3440*1440. It's not just gaming, general desktop performance is much better. It's the single core speed that makes the most difference I think especially on older games.

Higher than anticipated prices but then... well it cant be cheep doing this.

However if you think a stupid overclocked super hot ultra expensive full of holes piece of crap like the 9900KS is going to be enough to keep the top r7 and the 12 core r9 down then... well your an idiot.

I don't think so. $399 is the US retail price, Us retailers will be buying the SKU's cheaper than that as will UK retailers. The only difference is local US sales tax is typically around 10% and UK VAT is 20%. There are no import duty on CPU's into the UK either, the most we should need to paying for a 3800x including VAT is about £376. That's still £125 less than a 9900K.
