I have a weird issue that has manifested in the last week (had the card for months). For some reason upon boot up and at the start of certain games the card goes crazy. Fans at full whack.

Looking at the card now it appears that the last fan (closest the front of the PC) is on full blast. The other two off. This happens for 10 mins and now it's back to silent.

What do you guys do to diagnose weird behaviours like this?

Did you wipe drivers with DDU? Could you tell us which games are affected? Could you also use drivers no later than 19.5.1? (after a wipe).

Quick update about my watercooled Vega 64. The Predator 360 decided was time to give up. The filter inside the radiator is been ground by the pump and converted the clear liquid to mud. While successfully cleaned the CPU block, the watercool Heatkiller IV block for the Vega has a snapped screw, so cannot remove the cover of the block to clean it up. Which means need new block. In the mean time after cleaning up, the DCC pump decided had enough and went. I hope it went to watercooling parts Hell because it gave up 3 weeks before major upgrade -_-.

Having given away the reference heatsink, as found no need to carry it with me when moved to Greece, I am in limbo what to do.
If I watercool the card, need new block new radiator & pump. Cannot find the raijintek morpheus vega anywhere but on Caseking DE which is out of stock until 26/6, and Caseking FR until 24/6. (OCUK has no indication is ever will come back to stock). Which in PC terms is eons away, even if one week :(

In the mean time I am back with the laptop GTX1060 6GB and X4, a Vulkan only game, has absolutely horrible performance. :(

That sucks! Reminds me of why I haven't bothered with everyday watercooling. Guess you don't have a lot of options, but tbh you can't complain too much with a 1060, it's still a decent GPU!

Is on laptop not PC. And the games I play are slideshows like ESO & X4.

However yeah, sucks that Predator 360 just died like that, even if is 3 1/2y old. (Jan 2016). :(

Update. Yeah gsync my *****. Clicking the compatibility check box, true gsync working on the 2730Z but on every menu click screen, on any new popup, goes black for 1 second. Is annoying -_-

Hi guys, my old 980Ti is starting to misbehave and wondered if the Vega 64 was a decent upgrade?
I've been out of the loop for ages in terms of hardware and am not brand loyal at all, just want bang for buck and a performance bump.

Rest of the system is 6700k @ 4.6, 16gb Ram and will be used at 1440p 60hz for gaming.

Absolutely even with reference card, you would looking double the performance on some games like BF5, over 50% even on the most Nvidia sponsored games like Metro & Tomb Raider.
Let alone games supporting Vulcan and DX12.

Especially the Nitro adds another 10-15% over the reference card easily, while runs cool and quiet.
My only advice is on the games you play, check the clocks using the AMD overlay. (do not use MSI AB ever again).

If you see the clocks low compared to other games, you might need to make custom game profiles and set the P7 state as the minimum speed, thats all.
Good example are Hero engine based games like SWG and ESO.

It's a marginal upgrade, honestly. Remember, the 980 ti is more or less on par with a 1070, and the Vega 64 is more or less on par with the 1080. This is an old video but I'd say the performance difference hasn't change too much since then:

You can see a bigger difference in Vulkan titles, like here, but this is more the exception than the rule:

Nope - I did not do that with DDU. I can though. One day the card just started to be louder in PUBG, World of Warships and often right upon boot!

I upgraded to the recommended drivers (not the latest latest but the recommended ones, still no change)

Seriously review and perf comparison from 2017 not 2019? Pick any of the game from the review, they include both with latest drivers.

https://www.guru3d.com/articles-pages/gigabyte-geforce-gtx-1660-gaming-oc-review,1.html

Also this from last year comparing various V64s.

The guru3d results are simply too sketchy to take seriously. Look at Exodus & BF V performance, the gaps are simply too big! I know Vega 64 has more of an edge than the older video I posted but the 980 ti simply doesn't perform as weakly as at guru. And because they do not mention when they last tested or at what frequencies, it's hard for me to trust that data. Likewise, I don't like TPU data but at least we know it's recent, and if you compare 1070 vs V64, even accounting for it underperforming in their tests, it still doesn't leave a 980 ti that far behind.

A more representative then comparing 2070 @ 1905 vs reference V64 @ 1576 with a 8700K?

A Nitro has another 10-15% on top due to superior cooling before start tweaking, while the above 2070 is heavily overclocked and £200 more expensive as he is using the good chip.

Use DDU wipe out everything, use Ccleaner to fix registry then install 19.5.1 or 19.6.2.

Testing Games & co channels all post fake results. You should tell immediately, as a V64 owner, by the clocks, to say nothing of everything else. All I'm saying is, the difference between a 980 ti & V64 is not going to be massive, and will come way under 50% in all but the rarest of exceptions, or at 4K.

1576 is normal for a reference Vega 64 in Turbo mode.

Or you call 3dmark, myself and everyone who has Vega 64 a liar?

And that with just some paste replacement and reference cooler

RTX2070 at 1905 on the other hand, is heavily overclocked, most chips from cheap SKUs, cannot even go 1750.
