I've been looking at a Ryzen 3000 and want the x470 Asus Strix x470-I gaming, but B450-I is more available in stock. Both of these have bios updates for zen2 chips right? Should I go for the cheaper b450? Looking at a 3700x or 3800x.

Cheers

If you want a ITX motherboard then go for the ASUS ROG STRIX B450-I GAMING £158.99, Same board as x470-i just a different number & cheaper.
Comes with CPU fan header & also 2 x Case fan headers, True 6 + 2 Phase also,
You will need to update the bios to support 3000 series
https://www.asus.com/Motherboards/ROG-STRIX-B450-I-GAMING/ don't think the bios is out yet

The Asus X570 ITX version of this board will be almost same with 6 + 2, but maybe cost over £220
Being ITX They not really done anything Special with the board & PCI-E 4.0 will not matter or super phase & VRM Due to the Size.

Or also good boards
Gigabyte B450-I AORUS PRO WIFI (Socket AM4) Mini-ITX Motherboard £115 Bios is out F40
Asrock B450 Gaming-ITX/AC (Socket AM4) DDR4 Mini-ITX Motherboard £119 Bios is out P330

I Have the ASUS ROG STRIX B450-I GAMING & the Asrock B450 ITX & Asus Prime x470 full ATX

I was thinking of getting the AMD Athlon 200GE to just update the bios. That a apu right? I've seen it for £34

Yep with built in Vega 3 Graphics,
I am sticking with my Ryzen 7 1700, OC to 3700ghz, Can do 3900Ghz but not worth it for such a small gain & a lot of heat/watts
So my 1700 is near performance as the 2700x & can be had for a £130 new on the www
OCUK don't sale the ryzen 7 1700 version anymore only the X version

For me gaming ryzen 1700 1080p 60hz 27" monitor with GTX 1070 , Can still max games with over 60 fps some times over 200FPS so no reason to go for a 3000 series at the moment.
also great for streaming & the rest

I have a 8700k and bought it since released, but intel 8th gen is a dead platform. Not really wanting 9700k, Never bought AMD before and thought this would be a great time to not only go to AMD with a better future then Intel, but also go smaller to itx.

If you're happy with 1700 then stay where you are. I want to play with something a little different and have been wanting to go ITX. I should get at least half of the build money back from selling my 8700k cpu and mobo.

you need a Ryzen 1000 Series like the 1700 or 12,15 ,18 & a graphics card
or
2000 series CPU LIKE A 2600 OR 2700 & a graphics card
or
APU with built in graphics Ryzen 2200g/2400g or AMD Athlon 200GE, no graphics card needed since it built into the CPU
Don't no about AMD sending off a kit , I think that as ended way back, but you never know.

if you already have a ryzen CPU then all you need to do is
have the bios unzipped on a USB flash drive enter bios update Bios to support the 3000 series

Is it hard to do?
No, it's pretty straightforward. Each motherboard manufacturer has their own procedures, but they're mostly very similar and require only a few steps. These can be found on the official support websites very easily. You'll need to go there anyway to download the latest BIOS.

Caveat here is that depending on your motherboard and existing BIOS version, you may require a 1st/2nd gen Ryzen CPU to perform the BIOS update (X470 motherboard will support 2nd gen Ryzen CPU out of the box). Some more advanced motherboards can perform the BIOS update without a CPU installed.

Do you already have an X470 motherboard, or have one in mind?

all x470, 450 motherboards will need the update to support 3000 series, goes for the x370/350 also
Just know the brand & motherboard model & go to the website
like if you have say
Gigabyte B450-I AORUS PRO WIFI, you would go to gigabyte & to that motherboard, then to
support/ bios & dl Bios F40 support for 3000 series

Yes, what ITX case .

Really like the Raijintek Ophion Evo. Then I can do a 240 AIO on top? Or might just go air cooled and get the Raijintek Ophion. Can't decided which one? The only thing is I would need a very quiet low profile air cooler. Isn't noctua bring out a new low profile air cooler but in black. Need to look into it quickly before new cpu's come

Sorry OP, please let us know if you want us to discuss this in a separate thread.

I was looking at the Gigabyte Gaming 7.
This is the download support page for Gigabyte X470 Aorus Gaming 7 Wifi (rev. 1.1):
https://www.gigabyte.com/uk/Motherboard/X470-AORUS-GAMING-7-WIFI-rev-11#support-dl
Under BIOS section, the notes state that BIOS F40 supports 3rd gen Ryzen CPUs.

Make sure you go to the correct motherboard revision number. Above is for rev1.1, but there's also a rev1.0 which has a separate support page.

Be sure to follow the notes very carefully as each update may have different prerequisites before you perform the update. E.g. for F40 it states:
1. If you are using Q-Flash Utility to update BIOS, make sure you have updated BIOS to F31 before F40
2. Before update BIOS to F40, you have to install EC FW Update Tool (B19.0517.1 or later version) to avoid 4DIMM DDR compatibility on 3rd Gen AMD Ryzen™ CPU
