Hi,

Spec in sig .... yes it's old but works a dream however I would like a bootable NVME drive

Which series should I be looking at ? I looked at 9th gen and the upgrade route came to a staggering 1200 quid ! WTH !

CPU ~ £500
Mobo ~ £250
RAM ~ £500 (32GB)

Any cheaper options ? Happy to buy second hand

Cheers

A look on the interwebz suggests it's doable via BIOS modding (the example I found uses your exact mobo).

Other than that your cheapest option would be to retain DDR3 and go to Haswell. You could probably do it for minimal cost if you sell on your existing CPU and mobo.

Buy cheaper parts?

£300 on a CPU, £150 motherboard, 16GB of DDR4 would still be a monster system

Interesting.... interesting indeed - thanks. I found the post you referred to and bookmarked it. Weighing it up against the upgrade itch !

Another option... Thank you

@MrRockliffe I agree - Lets stop throwing money at Intel ... In actual fact I've been looking at AMD options which may be better placed for my multithreaded work loads

you can get to 32gig 3000mhz for £200 or with samsung b die for £240. Well below the £500 estimate.

Is AMD out of the question?

I am building a ryzen 2 rig for £365 that blows your 2600 system out of the water. https://cpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Intel-Core-i7-2600-vs-AMD-Ryzen-5-2600/620vs3955 Intel costs are insane right now, and my cost could easily be cheaper as it includes a 2600x instead of a 2600 which is better value for money.

Also unlike intel, AMD's lower class chipset has full o/c features so can use b450 boards to save money as well which I am doing.

Yeah strongly looking at AMD .... Intel prices don't really appeal and sorry I may have been misled by the RAM prices - I'll drop the RGB malarkey

Thanks for the options guys

@chrcoluk can you by any chance post your AMD spec ? Many thanks in advance

sure.

Bear in mind i deducted value of the free game in price I gave you as I wanted the game anyway.

Goods Ordered (prices in GBP)
£166.66 x 1 - AMD Ryzen 5 Six Core 2600X 4.20GHz (Socket AM4) Processor - Retail
£0.00 x 1 - FREE WITH CP-3AE-AM: AMD Equipped To Win - Ryzen Game Bundle - The Division 2
£66.66 x 1 - Asrock B450 Pro4 (Socket AM4) DDR4 ATX Motherboard
£99.99 x 1 - Team Group Vulcan TUF Gaming Alliance 16GB (2x8GB) DDR4 PC4-24000C16 3000MHz Dual Channel Kit - Blac

Sub-Total: 333.31
Shipping: 0
VAT: 66.66
Total: 399.97

The motherboard I picked is the only asrock b450 board with 6 sata ports, rest have 4.
They also only have one b450 with an intel NIC
The board supports usb3.1, m.2, overclocking etc.

https://www.asrock.com/MB/AMD/B450 Pro4/index.asp

You can get a 1600X for very good price from ebay right now (new), that is what I was going to do until I found out about the free game on OCUK.

My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £863.46 (includes shipping: £10.50)

run 5ghz just fine, 4.7ghz for avx loads on that board

Just curious what is the reason for a nVME boot drive?

Yeah seems a lot of cost for minimal (noticeable) gains, unless of course he wants to upgrade and is using this as an excuse to convince himself.

Honestly the only reason I went to NVME was because my board supported it and I got a cheap one just before Xmas on this week only, it boots a bit quicker but nothing else seems to do anything quicker to my untrained eye

Agreed, it seems outside of synthetic benchmarks the real world gains are tiny. I'll get nVME in my next build in a Fractal Core 500 case as want it neat with fewest cables/hassle.

Hey guys,

I went AMD in the end and am so pleased / over the moon in fact .... I didn't bother waiting for ryzen 3 or x570 as the price would have been premium plus I got the 2600 + 32GB corsair pro for a mere £250 and built around it

NVMe stick comes along on Monday which in all fairness and in hindsight I don't think I really needed in the end !

Thanks for turning me team red it has been a very long time apart ~ 15 years since I last bought an AMD cpu

Cheers
