Got a pic of the old lid etc. Was it in 2 halves and joined by a pin?

It was one piece before it broke, approx 660mm x 400mm ish.

From the picture I'm genuinely confused how it was stuck.

Wheel in with bumper resting on ground.

I didn't explain.

Buy a new cover plus surround

To replace the surround would mean digging up the concrete around the drain to cement a new surround in. Although the driveway is going to get refurbished soon anyway, but until then it needs covered with a new/old lid that fits.

Am I right in thinking that you're replacing the broken cover?

If so, why?

From what I can tell you did nothing wrong and the only reason the cover collapsed was because it was in a shocking state to begin with. If anything, I'd say those responsible for its maintenance owe you to the tune of at least £30.

Yes I want to replace the cover. It broke because it was probably 100 years old with a hairline crack in it. I always try to avoid it but it was bin day and bins were in the way. :(
