What from my current build can be redeemed?

Hi all,

I’m looking at building a new system shortly with the basis being AMD based, 3700x likely coupled with maybe an X470 Mobo.

System will ideally need to be future proof for games running on max settings. Looking at my current build, I’m not sure what could conceivably go towards the new build other than maybe the 1070 and monitor. Am I right?

Also is the 1070 still capable of performing to a high level in 2019 and potentially beyond?

Just to add, I’m not super fussed about 4K and bigger monitors than what I currently have.

Not ignoring your premise of an AMD rig but I think you'd be wasting your money on a new Ryzen system. Your CPU/mobo/RAM have legs in them yet, I'd see what you can squeeze out of it with a 4790k. A Ryzen will be better at other tasks, yes, but the only real benefit to gaming will be higher minimum framerate, and - depending on the game - a small bump in average/max. That would be for 1080p, the difference will be even smaller for running 1440p. Even at 1080p nearly all modern games won't be maxing out your CPU as it stands, so you'll benefit most of all from upgrading GPU.

:edit: if the socket was at the beginning of its life it would be almost worth dipping in to it now for the performance boost, with a view to being upgradeable in the future, however AFAIK this is the last release of CPUs on AM4.

Interesting, now you've given me something to think about

So you'd effectively recommend going with a new CPU (4790k) for now and riding it out for awhile longer yet? My only concern is this seems still a fairly pricey processor, and I'd not want to be in a position to have to change it in a year :(

Interesting youtube channel that. Tons of benchmarks of new hardware released past couple of days and they don't show they actually have any of it with them. 135 video uploads in the past 3 days, of 3 day old hardware, presuming to consist of a number of tests with different hardware each time. Quite prolific.

Actually reminds me of another channel that was getting called out for fake benchmarks and just uploading quantity for hits. I imagine there's plenty doing this as it's not hard, just do some maths based off Cinebench results by others or similar, and randomize here and there to throw people off and create click bait discussions. That guy apparently had all the GPUs and CPUs ever known to man and when the actual item was not being sold anymore he'd make sure to include affiliate links to even the MOUSE he used in his "test setup". :)

ah fair enough comment. i didn't delve further into what's in the video...so can't vouch for its authenticity

So is the general opinion still that I bang a 4790k? Or could I conceivably go to an i7? Any other aspects of my system I could upgrade to make a significant distance?

I'm on a similar 4770K + GTX 1070 pairing and it's fine and have no need to upgrade CPU just yet. So if you can find a 4770K or 4790K for decent money, go for it. The 4770K is sold for £110 from a retailer specialising in second hand goods. Cheaper than the 4790K at £170. There's no real difference between the two other than 4790K is faster speed out of the box before overclocking.

For what you are going to pay for a 4790k (they still sell for £150-200 or more on Ebay) you would be better off moving to the latest AMD Ryzen platform. You should get between £120-150 for your current cpu/mobo/memory so take that along with the money you have saved by not getting a 4790k and put it towards a Ryzen 5 3600 (6 cores/12 threads), X570 motherboard (only X570 boards are certain to take a 3000 series cpu without a bios flash) and some fast DDR4. If you really want to throw the boat out go for the 3700X. Whatever you decide to do don't pay silly money for a second hand 4-5 year old cpu that is still only 4 cores/8 threads with more security holes than swiss cheese.

Any boards earlier than X570 will most likely need a bios update before a 3000 series cpu will work in it. X570 launched with the 3000 series so is guaranteed to work out of the box.
Yes, all pre-x570 boards (i.e. b450/x470) will need an update until latest BIOS hit the sellers (although a lot in BETA thanks to small b450 EEPROM - but some have ability to flash without CPU as you know) - i must be interpreting your bracket incorrectly after the X570 in original post. :)

EDITED for clarity - hope it makes sense. Either way - OP has more info than he had before, but probably more confused :D

You have got me confused now!! :p
Hehe - not uncommon, on my part.

I have edited my original post for clarity although it made sense to me originally......................................I think. :D:p:D

Sorry bud - i hate doing posts like that - especially to respected members who clearly know their onions. (i nearly didn't post out of courtesy - but if you're like me you don't mind ambiguity being pointed out. And with my ramblings - i'm more prone than most :D And, you may be right - it could easily have been my error in translation.)

It got lost translation for me purely as i had previous gen boards in my head when reading the bracket (and probably only me, so don't worry) - but your edit leaves no ambiguity :)

Apologies for any confusion, i would have blamed the Scott in you but then again the Cornish are a bigger target :D

MSI B450 Tomahawk & Carbon BIOS can be pre-flashed via USB without having to install a Zen 1 CPU first
