Hi Everyone,

Currently have a 1080 GTX + 2500k and looking to upgrade.

Looking at the below but I'm quite confused on the following:

1) Is that a good Mobo choice? Suspect I'm off the mark on this one
2) 3600 mhz vs 3200 mhz ram - am i wasting money?
3) Do I need an aftermarket CPU cooler these days?
4) Is there much headroom on these past their boost OC? Happy to OC, but not sure if it's worth it anymore.
5) I need to replace some 140mm fans - Have i overdone it?

Worth noting I'm looking to play star citizen on this PC. Monitor is 2560 x 1440, but the GPU might result in dropping to 1080p perhaps.

Arctic P14s are way cheaper than Noctuas and PWM version even comes with longer 10 year warranty.

CAS18 is toward slower end for 3600MHz.
Good amount cheaper 3200MHz CAS16 would likely perform pretty much same.
This might actually perform better in games with CAS 16-16-16-36 timings:

3700X's Wraith Prism is for stock cooler excellent compared to chronically undersized buzzaws of Intel.
But if you want quiet cooling it's not that hot.
Also good cooling keeping temperatures lower allows automatic boosting to increase clocks more.
With Ryzens automatic boosting is mostly better than what can be gained from reasonable overclocking.

Thanks guys for the feedback, good to know I can save money on the fans. Might look into picking up a cooler, what's the go to these days?

With regards to the ram, I think you've both sort of said different things? Should i be getting 3600MHz, but perhaps a better CAS?

Cheers guys.

Ah very nice! Good saving there. Thanks.

Now to solve the motherboard choice, it’s much more confusing than it used to be!

I’m thinking b450 MSI pro carbon gaming. Looks like it’s much cheaper and won’t hold back the 3700x and ram.

Edit:

Can’t seem to find CBS ram anywhere. Remember OCUK used to stock it when I made my last pc.

The Gaming Pro Carbon is a solid board for the money. You also have the Tomahawk for a bit less if you don't need wifi.

The Ram is mentioned a bit further down in that thread by Tammzy. Gives you an example of what Crucial part number to google.
