Novak has won all his titles in an era of Federer and Nadal otherwise dominating everything. Federer got a few 'cheap' years, before Nadal came on the scene, to bulk his record. Nadal is a clay specialist whereas the other greats of the era have it as their weakest surface, which has allowed him to notch up a lot of titles there.

On the other hand, Fed at nearly 38 and still being considerably better than everyone except Nadal and Djok... that's ******* impressive!

In conclusion.... I dunno [shrugs]

The thing is if you think Novak is going to be slowing down at 38 you're going to be in for a shock. The man is a machine and I would put my house on him passing Federer's title numbers barring any disastrous injuries. He's basically the Floyd Mayweather of Tennis; a masterclass in defensive tennis but a style that's going to divide fans opinion. Personally I appreciate his game but I might have a different view if I watched him week in week out.

Nadal is out of contention for me. His numbers are too skewed by the French Open wins though he'll ever lose his crown as King of Clay.

Never won the French, in fact he never even reached the final.

Federer, having six more grand slams and having won at all four slams makes up for having won one less ATP final than Sampras.

Federer was thwarted three times on clay by the king of clay. If it weren't for Nadal, Federer would likely have four French titles, not one. As mentioned above; Sampras didn't even get to one French final.

I think it's only a matter of time though before Novak surpasses Roger and will have to be considered the greatest. Not a day I'm particularly looking forward to I must admit.

Sampras is a grass-court specialist and for being so and being active mostly in a quite different era, it was absolutely normal that he didn't push towards developing his game to suit the clay-court requirements and specifics.
Federer is also a grass-court specialist.
Nole is a hard-court specialist.

It would be better if ATP and WTA decide to make the clay-court season shorter and the grass-court season longer. After all, we have 0 ATP Masters on grass.

I don't know. 38-years-of-age needs some serious bio-hacking in order to stay competitive with the teens with their energy.

I highly expect Djokovic to break all records unless he gets injured. I can’t stand the guy, he is arrogant beyond belief and he is playing against past their prime Nadal and Federer, but the stats don’t lie and he will end up as one of the greats.

I admire his mental fortitude though in the same way that I do Lewis Hamilton. Lots of haters and an often hostile crowd, yet he uses this to his advantage and silences them all.

It would be interesting to see what the stats would be like if two of the slams were on clay rather than a hard court. I've no doubt Nadal would already be considered the greatest had that been the case.

As for Djokovic, he probably will go on to be the most decorated player but I'll never think of him as a great like Federer and Nadal. Excellent player, ridiculously fit but constantly hitting the ball back and waiting for his opponent to make mistakes just doesn't do it for me.

Only one player played to win yesterday and it wasn't Djokovic.

I was really hoping for Federer to win the title. Those 2 wasted championship points.....

But Nole had more wasted opportunities. The real result should have been a win in straight sets..

Clay is a terrible surface. When it's wet, it's basically mud. When it's dry and windy, the court becomes a desert with dust all over the air.

I was out sunday and only found time to watch the full final on iplayer last night. I had kept the radio off since sunday so I didn't know the result.

Well then.. what a match! It had everything didn't it? No runaway winner, back and forth changing who was leading, tit for tat all the way, 5 sets and a final tiebreak. I mean you couldn't squeeze a credit card between them, it was that tight.

You couldn't call it, no one knew who would finally take the trophy until the closing minutes. I feel Roger played the superior tennis, just the most amazing serve volleys that he won and his placement of the ball was sublime. Just so disappointing he couldn't wrap it all up at 2 championship points. Djoko was of course incredible too. But given the 5 year age difference and the fact Federer matched everything Djoko did makes Roger the better player imo.

I don't know if he'll exceed Fed's Wimbledon titles. It's possible. He's got a few years left to try and get to the same eight titles. I guess it depends what other talent is around in 5 years. Federer probably won't be or certainly not a threat anymore. Nadal will be 38, Murray 37. Who else is there, there doesn't seem to be any future superstars on the horizon.
