Talk me out of getting a 2080 over a 2070 super

I have been back and fore for days now looking at cards. Have a asus duo 2070 super on order which I managed to do when the prices were £475., its now gone up

I was then looking at the 2080ti but now decided its not worth the 2.5 times price of the 2070 super

However looking at some random reviews of some high spec 2080 it seems some cards at stock are one frame or so as good as a 2080 Super. For example there one of the top performing 2080 on benchmarks trades blows with a standard founders 2080s. Less than 2 frames on all benchmarks at 4k at stock

This particular 2080 is less than £630

It seems to offer a decent jump over a stock 2070super

The advice I read on these forums is that its not sensible to now get a 2080 when a 2700 super matches it. However looking into this it seems that some 2080 models are still better than the 2070s

I was all set on getting a 2070 as they were dropping a bit in price, then the 2070S were announced along with the 5700XT, so I was in 2 minds which one to get. As I just bought a Rift a few months back, I was leaning towards the 2070 super for VR, but yesterday I started looking at the 2080 as the 2080 stretches its legs a bit more at 4K over the 2070 super which would be better for VR. So I cant talk you out of a 2080 as I am leaning towards one now. The 2070 super I was thinking about getting was the MSI Gaming X trio, but for £40-£50 more I could get a 2080.

If your canny you can get a top end 2080 for around £600.

These are up to 15% faster (techpowerup) than a 2070s and are within 1-2 frames of their 2080S counterpart.

Whether that’s worth an extra £125 is up to you but make sure you compare apples to apples. For example comparing a cheap 2070S doesn’t give you the whole picture as a top end 2080 will also give you a better cooler, better RGB, better looks. Again whether that’s worth anything is up to you.

I think a top end 2080 for just over £100 more than a cheap 2070S is worth it. YMMV.

Any tips for top end 2080

Order placed on overclockers for the Zotac extreme. Looking at techpower up the 2080 extreme is within 1 fps of the founders 2080 Super and around 3 fps of the extreme 2080 Super which is around another £120 extra.

The price at £630 seems good especially compared to other sites and original price

I had always assumed the 2070 super was the same as the 2080 but its really not. All higher power gpu are expensive but I should get around 8 to 10 extra fps from a 2070 super to the extreme 2080 at 4k for an extra £150. To me that's OK. To get another 10 fps at 4k I would need to jump to the 2080ti so that's an additional £400 for that jump from the extreme 2080

Yes the Zotac amp extreme is one of the top end 2080’s with the best vrms and a higher power limit, practically equalling the supers for £200 less.

I’ve been known to waste money on silly things but I’m not paying £200 for like one fps!

Got a stable oc with 70 on core and 1000 on memory. The Samsung memory chips are really solid and stable

Final gpu time spy score of 11911

To me the extra cost over the 2070 super was worth it

I can ‘only’ get 11879 on mine (same model). I need to tweak my ddr4 ram speeds further I think as going from 2400-3000 netted me 500 points!
