The fact that the aftermarket might have found an "easier" solution is irrelevant. You're criticising VW for an official aspect of their design, when Toyota/Subaru have one which is arguably worse. Take your GT86 to a dealer and ask them to change the spark plugs and they will have your engine out and happily charge you £600 quid for the trouble, for a job that in almost any other car would take you about 10 minutes.
