Can't stretch to a Vigor 130 at the moment. Might just pick up a HG612 to get me setup and working again.

The more I read on them, it seems people use two different types with different chipsets depending on local cabinet type

When BT was first supplying them they did match the modems to the cabinets. After a while, you just got what was on the van.

From what I've seen matching modem and cabinet doesn't make enough difference to worry about. The HG612 has the advantage that it's fairly simple to unlock and get line stats from.

You shouldn't be paying much over £15 for an HG612, and you'd get most of that back if you resold it.

You’re over complicating this, an HG612 is inexpensive, has solid reliability, easy unlock giving access to stats (minor concerns about PSU’s failing). It’s unlikely you will see any significant difference between the ECI and HG612 in general use.
