We had 2 Samsung TVs on the wall in our canteen at work. They both had fans in them. Both TVs were replaced within 3 years after displaying the message "Cooling system malfunction" for about 2 months. I would never touch a monitor/TV with a fan. Fine if you only want to use the thing for a couple of years but my Dell U2713 is still going strong after 6 years and I hope to sell it on when I upgrade later this year.

Agreed. They are often a cheap afterthought, many manufacturers won't spend an extra couple of quid to put a decent unit in, even in items costing hundreds of pounds. Had to replace the fan in my T300RS after it started howling. Pity the whole thing died 6 months later anyway.

Which is why it was criminal the monitor industry didnt pick up on DSC to tide us over until 2020/21 when DP and HDMI catch up.

Only one Asus 43" screen coming out this year with DSC.

Can any-one from the human race tell the difference between 8 and 10-bit though?
.
Yes I can, easily. Suspect most people can. In slow moving games people will see banding but there is no need to run strategy type games at 144hz. Will it matter in fast moving games though? Nope, nobody will be able to see the difference.

So all you have to do is swap between settings which tbh is a bit of a pain but that’s it.

Linus has done a mini-review of the LG38GL950G:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NgDykMvzoG8

Guess it's the same **** as the 43" monitors. 4K, 144Hz, 10-bit... but not at the same time! Doing 144Hz you have to go down to 8-bit and 4-2-2.

It makes no sense to go for these high-res/High-hz monitors until we have new Displayport and HDMI to support it.

Uh no. 144 Hz you can run Full-RGB at 8 bit. Only at 160 and 175 Hz do you have to reduce to 4:2:2 chroma. Since this isn't really an HDR display, the use of 8-bit color instead of 10-bit color is basically irrelevant. I don't think people that have full 10-bit professional end-to-end work flows/applications are buying G-Sync monitors to do their work on.

The linus mini review doesnt make it clear whether 8bit is straight 8 bit or 8bit+FRC... either way inconsequential for a gaming monitor but if its 8bit + FRC its *extra* inconsequential.

Disappointed that there is still no release clarity announced.. was hoping something would come out of Gamescon....

Is the 38gl950g 21:9 ?

3840x1600 is a lot of pixels to drive even for a 2080ti at high refresh rates.

No it's not 21:9 even though LG themselves write 21:9 on it. It is 24:10 format. If you divide 3840 with 21 and multiply with 9 you get 1645,414.... But divide by 24 and multiply with 10 and you get 1600. :)

Is 3840X1600 going to be in every game as an option, I don't really want to go down the old road I did with my X34 when it first came out editing game files to get them to work at 3440.

It's virtually the same ratio as 3440x1440, so you won't have any issues, but I imagine this might be game dependent to some extent. I never had any problems with the X34 personally.

Well the nice thing about 37.5" 3840x1600 (besides the sweet 175 Hz), is although it has a similar PPI to 34" 3440x1440, the larger size will allow the monitor to be pushed back slightly. This will grant a bump in perceived clarity. 3440x1440x34" really never gave me that clarity I am searching for.
