Just wondering if buying a Ryzen 5 1600 for about £100 is still worth it or if I should cough up the extra and go for the later editions? I am currently pricing up a budget build for gaming and general use.

Depends what board your using? If you using less than a 400 series board then you will need a 1st gen cpu unless the board is used then might be a chance the seller updated the bios, either of the 1st gen are still good to buy, just have to try pay what you feel unless it’s the 1200 then £52 new is a no brainier ha

Lower than 400 series is fine with 2nd and 3rd gen.

Well I find with my 3700, at first not much in a game like Cities Skylines, but now it's about 10fps faster and loads much quicker.

1600 to 3700x, now 2600 though.

Why did you go back to a 2600? What you do tou have and what would you say was the drop in performance going from the 3700x to 2600

Sorry typo I meant "not 2600 though" as in wasn't really a valid comparison for your question.

The IPC improvements from 2 series to 3 series were supposed to be quite substantial and give a good boost to gaming. If affordable I would certainly skip 2nd gen and go to 3rd gen Ryzens like a 3600 or 3700 as they are great at 1080/1440p res, less so but still improvement there at 4k.
