Hi all,

I was hoping to wait on big Navi and maybe 3950X but my PC's (in sig) basically falling apart at this point so it's time to bite the bullet. In terms of budget my max is £2800 but I don't expect to get near that atm as it seems an utter waste of money to get a 2080ti for almost triple the price of 5700 XT for only ~30% more performance for example.

I think I've decided on an AMD 3700x and 5700 XT based build for now and upgrading again in a year or two to 16core+ CPU and 5800/5900xt or w/e is out then and hopefully there's more competition in terms of prices.

My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £1,597.14 (includes shipping: £13.20)

Is what I'm thinking so far and have heard Crucial Ballistix Sport 3200 is very good memory. I have no idea about a case although my current one tends to let in way too much dust so anything to minimize that would be good.

The other thing is the mobo, will I need a X570 as I plan to OC the RAM and maybe upgrade the CPU in the near future or will the Tomahawk handle that? Any other benefits?
Also is it worth an Aftermarket cooler as Ryzen doesn't seem to have much if any OC headroom so I may not bother?

Anything I should be looking to switch or glaring omissions?
All help appreciated,
cheers.

@Krono5

My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £459.89 (includes shipping: £9.90)

^^^^

better warranty being 3 yrs 2. 2 yr warranty on something costing over £200 is nuts!!!! Also UK RMA and rep support on here ! PowerColor is based outside EU

same price, triple fan cooler as well - 92mm fans and 2. slot design

in a year or two you'll most likely be rocking Zen 3 12 over Zen 2 16 cores. Hopefully with increased Core speed from 7nm EUV process and some IPC increases

2080ti would push a 1440p 144hz monitor to how it should be pushed, better yet new 165hz 1440p monitors that are coming out . you could in theory upscale to 4k and match xt 5700 1440p performance . BUT its a lot of money!

Yeah, or maybe even Zen 3 16 cores :) Depends how much games utilize more than 4 cores over the next few years with the new consoles coming out. 4k is really tempting but I just can't justify the price per frame for the 20xx series, with playing mostly older games atm until some big titles come out next year. Especially with other costs money saved could go towards.

I actually just pulled the trigger on the Powercolor from a competitor before you posted what with the availability issues so didn't want to wait just in case. The 2 year warranty is a problem but from experience I've only had things die practically out of the box or so many years later they're not technologically relevant anymore. If I'm going to upgrade again within 2 years that should be ok.

Did you have any suggestions for the rest of the build?

I just took delivery of my £2k system (included being built by oc).

Based an 3700x, x570 board, 3600 ram, 2tb nvme drive and 2070 super (does perform better than the rx5700xt after the latest nvidia driver release.

That didnt include monitor, keyboard or mouse. Adding those came to £2600 and it flies at qhd, 144 hz.

I have slightly oc the ram, cpu and gpu but only a little.

I can post the system bits if you like.

@orbitalwalsh Cool, I've been out of the loop for a while and just picked up on what I've read on here the last couple of days. Thanks for the help, it's good to know I haven't gone completely wrong so far.

@paulmapp8306 That'd be great although I think I've decided on everything but the case now

If your sorted bar the case I think your fine.

Nothing wrong with your original list given your thoughts in this thread. Add in a decent cooler and some extra case fans (most dont come with enough to get that cool air flowing) and your good. Personally I added a couple of silent wings 3 intake fans, and opted for air cooling on the CPU (quieter, and more reliable) in the form of a
Noctua NH-12a.

@robfosters With the Tomahawk out of stock and X570 is the only real alternative I think as I'll have to build it this week. Plus having looked at cases The Lian Li 011 Dynamic jumped out at me so it looks like a custom loop is gonna be a future upgrade which I've always wanted to do but never had the budget for. So a B450 wouldn't do it justice.

Just ordered most parts:

Red Devil 5700 XT
32GB Crucial Ballistix Sport 3200
3700X
Lian Li 011 Dynamic
LG 27GL850-B 27" 2560x1440 NANO IPS 144Hz 1ms FreeSync/G-Sync Compatible Widescreen LED Gaming Monitor
(No idea when it'll arrive)
Sabrent 1TB Rocket NVMe - The MP510 is sold out everywhere and this uses the same hardware.

I'll be adding a Corsair RM *50 and some Corsair LL120 RGB case fans (6?). Which just leaves a Motherboard and cooler. I would have reused the NH-d14 but it won't fit with <155mm case clearance so an AIO is a possibility now and then upgrading the CPU, GPU and going custom loop in a year or so.

I've heard the Gigabyte X570 boards are good although I've always gone Asus and the Corsair H115i and H150i Pro look interesting. I know less that nothing about either AIO's or motherboards so am completely lost.
All advice so far has been really appreciated.

@Krono5 Gigabyte Gaming X is a solid board, some push extra for the Aorus Elite with the idea of getting £30 Steam voucher for leaving a review .

Shame Gigabyte UD isn't really out here, in theory that should have been a £150 board

Corsair 650w RM series seems to be on Deal across many resellers so prob a corsair deal

Corsair also have a rep on here , @CorsairChris with UK RMA and CS . If AIO or PSU does go, they'll replace with a New one, stock normally from UK not EU. Seasonic also offers brand new replacements but shipped from Germany

@orbitalwalsh Those 2 boards seem the most popular, gonna go with the Elite. The 750w RM has just come back into stock at OCUK as well so added that to my order so I think it's just the AIO which I'll just take a look at what fits well in the Case forums.

Cheers for all the help :)

The 2080Ti and 5700XT arent only 30% between them;-

3DMark Fire Strike Ultra:
5700 XT - 6055
2080 Ti - 8477
40% increase from the 5700 XT to the 2080 Ti

3DMark Time Spy Extreme
5700 XT - 4021
2080 Ti - 6455
60% increase from the 5700 XT to the 2080 Ti

3DMark VRMark Blue Room
5700 XT - 2490
2080 Ti - 4719
90% increase from the 5700 XT to the 2080 Ti

Ashes of the Singularity
5700 XT - 54.4
2080 Ti - 83.6
55% increase from the 5700 XT to the 2080 Ti

Now I know that synthetic benchmarking isnt always the best measure of a card, but if we look at the average FPS in popular titles:

Shadow of the Tomb Raider
5700 XT - 54
2080 Ti - 79.6
50% increase from the 5700 XT to the 2080 Ti

GTA V
5700 XT - 61
2080 Ti - 101
65% increase from the 5700 XT to the 2080 Ti

Metro Exodus
5700 XT - 34.6
2080 Ti - 52
50% increase from the 5700 XT to the 2080 Ti

Battlefield V
5700 XT - 61
2080 Ti - 82
35% increase from the 5700 XT to the 2080 Ti

Overwatch
5700 XT - 90
2080 Ti - 131
45% increase from the 5700 XT to the 2080 Ti

Also, a 2080 Ti is closer to double the price of the 5700 XT you've selected not tripple, sure the 2080 Ti is overpriced but unfortunately in this round AMD still trail behind nVidia when it comes to producing a top-of-the-tree GPU. The 5700 XT is a great "upper-mid" ranged card, the 5800 // 5900's (if we ever get them) will be right up there with the 2080 / 2080s and 2080 Ti's I'm sure but the 5700 XT is more in competition with the likes of the 2060s, 2070 and 2070s (both in price and performance).

your not just looking at average but lowest frame rate @RandomReload , and then settings , RTX 2080Ti you'd expect to run everything at ultra regardless
