UK Dodges US Sanctions To Settle Iranian Bank’s $1.6bn Damage Claim – Reports

Britain reportedly used a third country to avoid US sanctions as it settled a £1.25 billion damages claim with Iran’s Bank Mellat.

Bank Mellat, where the Iranian government owns a 17% stake, sued the government over British sanctions imposed in 2009 that prevented it from doing business with the UK’s financial sector, with the settlement reached only in June 2019 after ten years of negotiations. Bank Mellat argued that the UK’s actions “substantially damaged the bank’s reputation” and led to the loss of profits, customers and access to international banking services. The bank originally sought £3.2 billion ($3.9 billion) but this fell to £1.25 billion ($1.6 billion) with interest.

The Supreme Court ruled in 2013 that the sanctions were illegal and the government’s response was irrational and disproportionate.

The payment was made through a third country to evade US sanctions, which have in effect cut Iran off from the global financial system. The US reimposed sanctions on Bank Mellat along with other Iranian entities in October last year.

Iran’s Ambassador to London Hamid Baeidinejad confirmed on Friday that the UK government has made the payment to the Iranian side, describing the procedure as an important legal success for the Islamic Republic of Iran.

How do we settle payments of this size when we are more than this amount in debt? Where does this money come from? And if it was freely available why wasn't it used on our dire public services already?

Because they probably got the money through the sale of even more bonds anyway. It’s not ‘hard’ to raise money where required.

You've been contracting at a bank for 10 years and you're unsure how governments raise money?

That's it, I'm zeroing your available balance.

I'm confident it will be fixed, those IIT grads from India are pretty damn good you know. Don't believe the stereotypes from other industries who've outsourced on the cheap...

They'll spot your errors in an instant and be like

"Yo, NVP...

"

And before you start thinking "LOL, they're not speaking proper English like wot us Brits do..." The phrase is actually from old school Victorian English and perfectly correct.

This is posted at the same time that Pizza Express posts it has debts over £1bn. Found where the money came from. Clearly we were not eating enough pizza to cover this up.

Money isn't real. Add a 0 to the end of any digital balance and boom.

If that were the case then why did various banks get in trouble... surely they can just add money no?

If only Bear Stearns and Lehman Brothers and Northern Rock had just added a zero.

Not so simple...

it's kind of like the old days when they used to shave the edges of coins to get gold, except these days it's done with computers on a much bigger scale.

it's a big amount when all in one lump but when spread out to an individual level it's a small enough amount they can steal it without you noticing.

I'd be curious to know how that sidestepping of the sanction worked. Surely someone has to be guilty of violating it?

You would have thought we would use the sanction as an excuse to not pay them £1.25billion

Seems odd we would actually go to such lengths as using another country to pay it, it seems like a **** you to our pals the US
