1440p Gaming

I've made do with a 970 at 1440p for an awful long time. Details turned down, obviously, but it wasn't a horrendous experience by any means.

Now using my laptop's 2070 Max-Q to drive it and that doesn't quite max out the 144Hz, but it's doing a perfectly fine job of it until I can justify buying a new GPU for the desktop...

GTX970 still doing me well since I upgraded to a 1440p 144 Hz monitor. Obviously can't run modern games at full whack but works well whilst I whittle away at my severe backlog of older games!

So I recently bought a Z35p 3440x1440 ultrawide monitor, my 980 is "kinda handling it".

Forza I see around 80fps on medium settings
Overwatch med/high i see 100fps
Borderlands 3 low/med i'm lucky to see over 50fps.

What i will say is, i've never seen a heatsink glow red before xD I'm seeing 80c+ since bumping up to 3440x1440, that's after taking my cooler apart, cleaning the dust out and applying new thermal paste (The old paste was a solid hah)

So If you're willing to compromise on quality settings I dare see you'd see over 60fps at 2560 x 1440, My next upgrade will be a 2070 super or 2080 super, shame to have such a nice monitor and only can run med settings at not the monitors capable refresh rate.

to all the people saying a 1070 or 980ti is good enough for 1440p. please explain how? i get like 90 fps on Apex Legends which is well optimised. My monitor is 165 hz and my GPU is a 1080.

For 1440P you need 1080ti, 2070s or 5700XT or at a push a 2060 Super minimum these days.

60 FPS max settings is more than enough, 980ti is plenty for 1440p, never had an issue when I used it. Anything above 60fps is enough maxed out. I never had a game when I used to have a single 980ti that wasn't holding at least 60fps, the card was overclocked a bit but still it was plenty. Moved to 2 x 980ti, wasn't a big jump really. I only changed to the cards I have now because I had family that needed cards so I gave them those. But anyone saying it isn't enough I will never understand. That was on a 144hertz monitor at the time 1440p, never had any issues and I have over 2000 games on Steam.

I'm running a 9900k and a 1080ti on a predator x34 ultrawide at 1440p at 100hz and I struggle to maintain decent frame rates in certain titles dropping below 30fps on occasion. Okay so I've got more screen real estate than some but it's not a cake walk to run.

It all depends what games you are playing but if you want to play modern games than obviously get a graphics card as powerful as you can afford.
Control for example brings most GPUs to its knees and overclocked 1080ti is barely enough to run this game at 1440p with medium settings...
