At least they acknowledged that it was a failure before seriously trying to implement it. So they probably didn't waste much of our money on it.

What? They literally did try to implement it.

Don't need to actually implement something for it cost the taxpayer, after all a certain London Mayor spent millions on a bridge that doesn't exist and a certain disgraced transport secretary spent millions trying to get a pizza company with no ferries to run the government contract for whatever was needed... (not to mention the losses incurred by HS2, Heathrow expansion and the NHS IT system that was delayed or abandoned that all cost billions)

The consultancy will have costed money, whatever company they lined up will have costed us money in contracts (assuming it got that far), the time wasted on this is bad enough.

They'll think of something worse, more encompassing and entirely totally unenforceable/technically inept.

Probably provided wholly by the Chinese government as a friendly gesture.

They probably won't even need the pass in a few years what with all of the numpties getting internet-connected microphones and cameras installed in their homes and creep in the use of facial recognition.

I said they didn't seriously try to implement it. Which they didn't. There was a lot of talking and very little action.

I'm sure they did waste some public money on freebies to their friends consultancy work, but I think what I said is true - "they probably didn't waste much of our money on it." Not in the context of government money-wasting, which goes way beyond that.

Do you have any evidence regarding how much money they wasted on it? Bearing in mind that nothing happened.

We'll just have to wait until a FOI happens as they're hardly going to admit wasting money, it's definitely not zero though, that much is sure.

True, but is anyone claiming that it is zero? Maybe some politicians are, but I doubt if anyone believes much of what they say. They'd say the sky was purple with orange polka dots and rotating green cubes if they thought that would get them votes.

But what about the children?:eek::(
Andi.

Fairly certain that is still illegal.

Take a bow, sir! That was most excellent, and didn't get the recognition it deserved. One is most amused! :D

As for the porn site ID nonsense, I'm glad it fell flat on its face as it deserved to. Hopefully this causes our technologically illiterate, ever increasingly dystopian government to think twice in future.

Edit: Maybe not. I just remembered they're teaming up with Barr (US) and the Aussies to try to get end-to-end encryption effectively banned in consumer products. Because terrorists and paedophiles don't know how to use GPG, SSH or Tor, apparently.

No it wont. You underestimate their plotting and scheming for the next thing.

What Government has been responsible with the publics money? Seriously...

There's a defined difference between trying to provide infrastructure that actually means something to people, vs a puritanical ideological and authoritarian project you knew would never work in the first place.

There's a difference between doing the wrong thing (PFI) for the right reasons (funding education mainly?) and doing the wrong thing (trying to install something that the Stasi or KGB would think impressive & desirable) for the wrong reasons (to shame people's sexual natures and frustrate them).

I get that it was "technically" for safeguarding kids, but it was never going to work on them (has anyone seen how savvy a kid is lately?), so it couldn't have been for that reason realistically no matter how much they try to explain it that way... otherwise they wouldn't have stopped trying.

I always used to think that. But it isn't always so.

Kids are very app savvy. They can use WhatshifaceApp or <insert app/device here>.

They aren't all that technical, for the most part. At least from what I've seen.

My lad was switching on the TV, selecting netflix, then selecting the kids profile before choosing his own cartoon to watch at just past 2 years old. We'd not shown him how to do it, he'd just observed and knew how it worked.

I'm fairly sure I was still playing with my own crap at that point.
