Escort. Failure to follow means the airliner get shot out of the sky. The government is more than willing to sacrifice the lives of a few hundred if it means preventing terrorists flying a plane into somewhere that risks thousands of lives.

But why were they needed anyway? "Yeah, we've a got a drunk woman restrained on the floor" doesn't exactly make you think of the possibility of a terrorist attack.

Because the message that was sent wasn't "we have a drunk woman restrained on the floor." the message that was sent was "Flight deck secure, cockpit door not compromised.". The air traffic controllers took that to mean that an attempt to access the cockpit had been made and so called in the military, since ANY attempt to breach the cockpit post 9/11 will scramble a military response.

They would have been practising low level flying in the Peak District

It is more what the plane they were needed for would be doing i.e. flying into a building that he's getting at, not what the fighter jets would otherwise be doing if they were needed but weren't scrambled.

I read the first and last pages of this thread, and that's twice that stockhausen's mentioned fighter jets flying in the Lake District. I'm guessing there's some anti-Tory rant lurking below the surface there, just bursting to get out.

EDIT: Sorry, first mention on page 2 :)

Ahh, so not actually the Lake District then. You do know that both the Peak and the Lake District are popular low-flying training grounds don't you? At least you would if you ware a hill walker - perhaps not if you are a Tory (just in the interests in consistency ;)).

Solid comeback. You should be a politician with arguments like that.

I have to disagree with most of this. We live in an incredibly comfortable age in First World countries and yet rose-tinted spectacles are often erroneously applied to the past. Any student of history knows how utterly terrible things were compared to now.
You may be revising that statement after 5 years of a Boris Johnson government :p
