One of my faithful 980tis let out the magic smoke today (big burn mark on the back of the pcb) leaving me with just the one card. not a bad purchase really, bought them june 2015

whats the upgrade path for these now? Am happy to use the one card for the time being as only playing total Warhammer at the moment.

For value the 2070S seems best atm, about the speed of a 1080Ti and slightly faster once optimised for (see RDR2 for example) :)

or you can push the boat out for a 2080S, but not as good value tbh.

In before everyone says wait for 30xx cards. 2070Super is definitely a good bang for buck card from what I can see. The 2080Super is even better, but reviews suggest the performance gain does warrant the extra cost. Then if you want silly power, but at an even sillier cost, 2080ti.

If you don't have something you desperately want more power for then yeah, wait for 3000 series. It's less than a year away now, maybe even as little as 6-8 months. To get back to the 980ti SLI level you'd have to go at least up to a 2070S, and anything past that ramps up in price dramatically. So it won't really feel like a massive leap, that's why I'd say wait.

The upgrade path is basically a 2080Ti but you have to weigh that against:
- Priced and marketed like a piece of Tiffany jewellery
- Not hugely faster than a GPU at 1/3 the cost
- We are likely to see a competing model from AMD in the next 6months
- We are likely to see a new range from Nvidia in the next 6-7months

The 2070S is imho a good replacement for a 970/980 or if you need a solution now. If you can wait I'd say wait, if money isn't a factor then go for a 2080Ti.

A 2080Ti is hugely faster than cards at 1/3 it's cost. I'm not sure what benchmarks you're looking at but a 2080Ti will slaughter anything in the £350 bracket.

However, I wouldn't personally spent £1100 on a flagship model now. 2070Super or wait if you really want to see what the 30xx series has in store

I'm on 980Ti SLI at the moment...

I'm seriously uhming and ahhing about getting either a 5700xt or 2070 super with these deals around so I can sell the 980ti's while they are still worth something, and then I can be a little more patient to see what big navi and the next gen of nvidia brings.

I can probably sell the 980Ti hydrocoppers for around 180-200 each with a bit of luck which makes it a pretty cost neutral upgrade. Given the vast majority of my gaming is VR these days it should be a reasonable uplift that can carry me over to the new cards next year, and if I can do it at minimal expense after selling the old cards then why not?

I was in this position about a month ago, opted for a 2070 super. Best upgrade ever, performance wise its faster than 980ti sli by some margin. On wildlands for instance on max settings at 1080p 144mhz i would manage a 70-80 fps on average but with 2070 super it would be in the 90-100+.

I don’t agree whilst the 2080Ti is certainly faster than say the 5700 XT it’s more Ford Mondeo overtaking than “slaughtering” it, for that subjective title I’d want to see a positive 200% gain in perf and its what something like 50% not very exciting imho

Wow I'm actually quite surprised and just how relatively close the 5700XT is compared to the 2080Ti considering the price difference. Buying a 2080Ti this late in 2019 would be mental now, unless you can get a used one for under £700 tops. I'd consider AMD if I wasn't commited to G-SYNC.

But you can't say that a card that is 3x the price should deliver +200% performance, otherwise no one would even entertain the idea of SLI. SLI costs x2 but almost never yields +100% performance over a single card. It would be nice to think that 3x the price = 3x the performance but it doesn't work like that. But yes, I'm still shocked to see in benchmarks the £900+ card giving typically 50% performance over the 5700XT. That must be a bang for buck gem.
