Hi,

Now winter is here, I am looking at upgrading my motherboard / CPU & ram (& SSD if it is worthwhile).
I built this rig over 10 years ago and have only really upgraded the CPU and graphics card.

I game at 1440p - mainly FPS like Battlefield etc.

I have a budget of around £1000-1200 (couple of hundred more if it is really worthwhile).
What are my best options?

I dont mid going either Intel or AMD, no particular sway.
Or would I be better off waiting a short time longer for any upcoming newer tech?

Many thanks

yes, my currect rig is in my sig

You have a fair few decent bits to reuse then, Id only really look at changing CPU/Motherboard/Ram & PSU....

Something along the lines of Ryzen 3700x, X570 Board, 16GB RAM 3000+mhz and a decent 650w PSU will fit the job just fine.... You'll probably still have spare money to get a 1TB SSD Drive to.

There are other routes to go down but this is something id look at, Others will be along shortly to add their input :)

My PSU has worked flawlessly since I got it.
I have not gamed heavily for 3-4 years, so will it really need changing?
I was also considering a NVMe SSD for the operating system?

Thanks for your advice

I was just thinking of getting something abit more upto date with abit of warranty, I think the Corsair units come with 10 year warranty so plenty of time.... Would you just want a drive for OS or Games and OS?

ok just putting your specs here just because some forumers (like myself) don't have sigs enabled

Xeon X5675 @ 4.3ghz, Gigabyte UD5 mobo, 12gb Corsair Vengeance 1600mhz, H50 Cooler, Tagan 900w PSU, MSI Duke 1080Ti, Asus Xonar D2x Soundcard, Crucial C300 128gb SSD, HyperX Savage SSD 240gb, Samsung F3 1tb HDD, Kingston 240gb SSD, Sony DVD RW, Corsair Obsidian Case, Acer Predator Z35P monitor

i did a similar upgrade (ie just keeping the 1080ti) - and not having to upgrade the gpu makes the budget a lot more flexible

Code:
for reference, my build:
Ryzen 3700x £300
Aorus X570I PRO WIFI £227
2x 16gb Crucial Ballistix LT e-die £146
2x Corsair MP510 960GB £190 total
EVGA 1080ti SC black edition £570 (reused)
Silverstone RVZ03 £80
Seasonic Focus+ Gold 650w £60 (reused)
Cryorig C1 £53
Noctua NF A-15 PWM £23

i would say you're probably looking along the same lines...
3700x
asus x570 tuf gaming wifi
16gb or 32gb fast ram

i'd change the psu because targan is an el-cheapo psu and probably getting on with age already. see this post i made here: PSU lifespan?
but long and short is that an excellent psu will last, a mediocre psu won't

also you have a lot of random small capacity ssds.
i'd probably consolidate it all into one large nvme ssd. the sabrent rocket 1tb is a decent nvme ssd and costs the same (if not cheaper than) normal sata 3 ssds - £110 - would be my recommendation

@father-ted that was only in response to the assumption that you were getting an nvme ssd solely for the os.
basically there's negligible difference in real-world speeds between a sata 3 ssd and an nvme ssd, especially in os booting/games.
the main advantage in nvme ssds (apart from size and lack of cables) is in sustained transfers (ie for programs that hammer the storage like video encoding/editing)

Question on the mobo - What is the on-board sound like, or would I be better off sticking with my current Xonar card? (I use headphones but I also play loud music through my speakers in my man cave - so want decent quality).
Which PSU should I look at?
Which M2?

Will the current Cyber discounts last all of this week?
Apologies for the questions :)

Ok thanks pal.
Any advice on the best PSU & M2 to go for?

Great value psu with a 12 year warranty.

Gigabyte NVMe SSD which has a 5 year warranty. Not much more expensive than a regular SATA.

You could also save some cash by going with the R7 3700X, Gigabyte X570 Aorus Elite/Pro, Crucial Ballistix Sport LT or Patriot Viper Steel Ram. The Alphacool Eisbaer LT 360 is also a very good cooler if going with a Liquid variety.

My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £202.48 (includes shipping: £10.50)
