I have my retro games stored in a large tall oak MDF bookshelf but it's unsightly. I'd prefer something smaller 1-1.5m in black to match the rest of the furniture in the room.

I was looking at this with the intention of buying 2-3 of them, as I have about 2.5m of free wall space, but it's it out of stock in black. They also have a nice display cabinet but it's only available in oak colour.

Can anyone suggest something similar? What are you guys using for displaying your games collection?

We built our own board games storage, no reason you can't do similar, just on a smaller scale.
Couple of sheets of 18mm ply and cut to size, painted and added some material to line the shelves.
Slots are double width because a lot of board games are not a standard size box.

Thanks for the replies everyone. I'll check out IKEA as they have a decent selection and those Billy shelves seem like they might fit the bill.

I don't really feel that my carpentry skills are up to the job of constructing it from plain MDF I'm afraid!

Are there any stores other than Argos and IKEA you'd recommend for shelves?

I wouldn't bother with argos personally. IKEA have much higher standards and specialise in furniture. Argos is basically just a place you go to if desperate or if they have a good deal on.

Yeah, I'm not really looking for anything expensive or fancy but at the same time I don't want to buy tat and appreciate IKEA is likely to be better.

The thing I liked about the Argos storage was that it wasn't too tall and was just deep enough to accommodate DVDs/games whereas most bookshelves are fairly tall/deep and would look pretty imposing in a small room.

you can get a whole host of stuff in ikea in all different sizes. there quality is actually good for what it is. whereas I doubt argos has anywhere near the same tests or control.

I've got the smaller version of that argos one and it is just the right depth for a DVD case. Quality isn't amazing but it has survived a few house moves.

Either Billy or Kallax from IKEA

The furniture in this price range is twice as good from IKEA vs Argos

The great things about Kallax is you can get baskets, doors etc to add some variety to fill in some of the squares
The 4 high, 3 wide units would probably suit you, around 1.5m high, and 1.2m wide.

all my DVDs are in Argos cabinets, not had any issues at all w/ them. decent price, decent build, easy to assemble and depending which you get they can have adjustable shelves to suit what you want on them.

The thing about Kallax is that it's pretty deep at 40cm so sticks out from the wall a fair bit. I'd ideally prefer something suited to DVD storage rather than a bookshelf really. However with physical media going out of fashion most places seem to have given up on creating DVD/CD specific storage these days unfortunately.

Ah right, we have 4 units from IKEA but they are really tall so wont suit your shorter unit plan

Yeah, plus at 2m hight they're presumably designed to be attached to a large bookshelf to provide stability as they look as though they'd fall over on their own!

nah we have 4 and none are attached to anything. IIRC there is a small bracket at the top your supposed to attach but we didnt as we have hard floors they are fine without

Billy is good for a collection, but they are quite deep. If you are just looking for something that is about 1 dvd case thick, gnedby will be good. I use a mixture of billy and gendby

you can hook them to the wall, and there is a little staple thing to connect them to each other as well

A question for Kallax owners with the insert doors, what is the opening size with the door in place (I doubt the Drona boxes will fit anymore). My cats will savage Drona boxes so I need doors but want boxes (plastic or otherwise) that I can slide in or out.
