Yes but the point was being made re: "we" as in the British side. thus another poster mentioning the British citizens etc..

Obviously there were incentives for the Argie to invade in the first place.

I'm genuinely not sure what your point is. Falklanders are British citizens, and as a British overseas territory the UK is responsible for defence of the Falklands. So we'd defend them for their lives, their rock, their oil, their everything.

Not a film, but there was a fantastic documentary released about a decade ago. Only wish I could remember the name of it. There was a section in it where they did a re-enactment of a covert op where they were flying through some valleys at night in a Westland Wessex.

The point is simple: the oil has nothing to do with it. It's simply because they're British Citizens and the Falklands is a British Overseas Territory.

The Falklands was a war between a world power and a bunch of cold, hungry, ill-equipped conscripts. Read some of the accounts from the Argentine side: it's pretty grim. I can't imagine that it makes particularly promising source material.

Those conscripts were dug in and equipped with better weaponry than the UK troops.

as you say, plus the accounts of the uk soldiers who took them as prisoners when they surrendered.

wasn't their an inside diplomacy issue for British/French concerning their maintenance and support for their exocet missiles used against the UK -
did they release any records under the 30year rule ? so further source for docu dramas.

..obviously Afghanistan movies, much more commercialised Kajaki etc.

Yeah. Thatcher threatened to the French she would nuke Buenos Aires if the French wouldn't withdraw their support.

I know what your saying but for what it was worth and cost, just let em have it

Have you ever been there? Spoken to a local? I once had thoughts similar to this, however having spent a year of my life there now and meeting the locals (including the odd arrangement where one of the family's back gardens was used as a helicopter landing site), my opinion couldn't be more opposed to yours. They are very, very much our countrymen in terms of shared values and culture, however they also have a strong sense of identity as islanders and are rightly fiercely passionate about their right their right to live there. Abandoning them or forcing them to abandon their homes to save expense would have been unforgiveable, but hey I heard it was once cool to hate on Thatcher so I suppose good on you for keeping up that tradition.

A little known side piece to the Falklands conflict is that Chile was quite significantly involved on the UK side. That was completely hidden until quite recently, but it's a large part of the reason why Pinochet got far better treatment from the UK than seemed appropriate given what he did.
