Yes you're reading that correctly.
The 9940x has more cores and more threads, but that's not going to make much difference in games, it's more for specialist applications that can make use of all the cores, I'd guess video and graphics production for example.

Yup. More expensive doesn't automatically mean better.

That goes for pretty much everything in life, more so, as I get older and wiser.

As above, very different workloads, aimed at people that need the cores and are typically business purchases rather than personal use.

You're comparing a workstation grade productivity CPU with a gaming CPU. The price has nothing to do with it.

It's like comparing a £200,000 agricultural tractor with a £15,000 Ford fiesta for your daily commute. Then wondering why the ultra expensive tractor only goes 40 MPH while the Fiesta can go 110 MPH.

The 9940X supports twice as much memory, has twice as many memory channels and nearly 3x as many PCIe lanes. It's a far superior workstation chip.

There may be cache differences (I have not looked) but the reason the 9900k is faster in the games is the faster Core speed.

Common sense dictates if they were identical (cache+speed) and only core count differed then they would be the same in games if the game did not make use of extra cores or if it did the 9940X would be faster
