I see.
Forget 300bhp, go for an MX5 and super/turbo charge it.
10k though? yes you could get a Mk3 or 3.5 for under 10 but getting a good 300 out of it along with some mods for the suspension wont be cheep.
I was thinking of a supercharger kit for my mk4 but even it on a new car only see's what?? 250.. ok it weighs sod all and will go like hell but its no cheep.
Disagree there , it’s very much a classic, clean low mileage examples aren’t climbing in value rapidly for any other reason than they are already very much a classic and - good ones - highly sought after. It's an old 3 series. It's years from being a classic.

You don't need 300 with such a low weight though.
E46 M3 is 215bhp per tonne.
You can add a stage 1 turbo to an MX5 NC from BBR for £5k which will give you 262bhp which is 236bp per tonne.
There are many options with the MX5 for adding forced induction, there's something available for pretty much all budgets.
You’ll note I’ve not given the OP any advice whatsoever with regard to the sanity (or otherwise) of buying an old BMW.If I remember right, are you not bad advice for old BMWs?
Hasn't the OP already owned an S14a and a turbo MX5 though?
