Will a Corsair SF450 be fine for a 3700x / Red Dragon 5700XT build?

Currently using a 550watt Antec bp550 plus but will be aiming to go down to an SFFPC soon.

I know I could get the SF600 but I feel that might be a bit redundant. The only other parts in my computer are an M2 drive and 16 GB of RAM. No RGB.

Thanks

Get the SF600, better to have too much than too little. While the SF450 is a excellent psu I would want more headroom than that provides. I hope you aren't using that BP550 plus with the 3700x/5700XT as it's only a low end budget psu and only has 384w on it's 12v rails.

Worth noting PSUs are more efficient when not maxed out. I would aim for a 600-750W PSU. My similar build is using a 750W Corsair AX PSU. The PSU may be quieter too if less stressed, lower or no fan noise.

The efficiency difference at 50% and full load is tiny. You are talking around 2% at most, so not even worth worrying about. Also a bigger wattage unit doesn't mean it will run quieter. You have to consider things like the fan quality and also fan curve.

The point being, buy a quality PSU in the 750W range and you're done in most cases. Mine was bought for the very reasons you mention. However you look at it running at 50% is still "better" than on the ragged edge. For how much they cost, £130 in my case, 9 years trouble free was with it. Replacement incoming later this year ;)

Not arguing about buying a quality unit, but trying to run it at 50% is pointless. A 2% efficiency difference is neither here nor there.

I run a 5700 XT and an R5 2600 on a CX450 without problems.

At stock speeds you should be fine on an SF450. But there may not be a vast amount of headroom. Personally, I'd buy the SF600 (or the EVGA GM 550, which is a decent and slightly cheaper alternative).
