Started playing this when it came on game pass and having a great time so far, but there's a couple things I'm not sure on.

How focused should I be on collecting things from the environment? Also not sure what kinda things I can just sell as junk to a vendor and what I should keep. I've collected some recipes for armor and stuff but I don't have many of the needed items, and not sure if it's ever worth going out of my way to get them or whether vendor stuff will be better.

And also how much of my time should I spend on making oils and potions etc? They seem quite tedious to make right now, does that get better once I invest some points in alchemy?

Of course I'm pretty early on so I imagine it doesn't matter too much right now, I'm mainly just curious for late game.

Also is there some sort of respec later on in the game?

Personally, I never bothered with oils and potions - other than the times when a Quest required it. Frankly, I found that the game was still completely playable without using these things.

As for what stuff to keep - I don't think that herbs/flowers/potions or whatnot take much/any space - so you can just go around happily collecting them, or buying them - selling them on when you have a bulk, to make a bit of cash.

Thanks, can you explain how I get this sword please and how do I go about collecting silver?

https://witcher3map.com/w/#3/-65.11/-67.59

Just west of the 'Ransacked Village' which is the bottom right green waypoint there is a Bandit camp and it has the Serpentine Steel Sword Diagram which will give you the quest to locate the sister silver sword which is located in the Graveyard to the north of the map directly above 'The Mill' waypoint - with a Place of Power there. It's guarded by a Wraith.

You can get silver from loot and or buy items containing silver from merchants and have the Blacksmith/Armorer dismantle it for you to craft into Silver ingots.

I can't remember what I used on my 1st play through, as for armour I think it was the cat gear, think thats the light armour, I might try the bear armour this time.

I think the bear one called the Ursine armour set? I acquired the Surperior armour diagrams quite early on once you land in Velen but obviously unable to use them till much later. Never done a build with it but from what I've read it suits swilling potions and decoctions to buff damage/defense as naturally it makes Geralt slower and more of a Tank defensively.

I'm going Cat / Wolf for final build this time once I can get into the expansions but utilizing Griffin for the time being.

All this Witcher talk, I might have to dive back in :D I quite enjoyed the Blood and Wine expansion, that whole new map was really nice, it actually felt a tad depressing to return back to the normal maps.

The Netflix series was what inspired me to pick it back up. Glad I did. The game is a masterpiece and still holds up very well visually.

I've now hit level 30 and have 13 points available. Why can't I access the third row in the abilities tree? They're locked and saw I need 1/3/8 more points of something or other. I've got red mutagen + three red abilities, two greater blue with five blue abilities + random brown one and one green mutagen + three green abilities, all the slots are filled and I've got all the available abilities in the second row. What have I done wrong?

It could be that you haven't got enough points in specific colours (skills) to unlock the next tier. From what I can remember, I stuck with all blue. There isn't much scope to mix and match like you've done - three red/five blue/three green. You'll be jack of all trades, master of none.

You need to invest the 13 points you have available into the Skill Tree you want to unlock. It takes a certain amount of points invested in that chart to unlock the next 'tier' of skills.

So for a combat build the Tree has Fast Attacks, Strong Attacks, Defense, Marksmanship and Battle Trance.

Each of those has its own separate sub 'line' and its these skills you need to upgrade and invest the points in to unlock further tiers. For example, Fast attacks first tier is Muscle Memory and this maxes out at 5 points, then to get the second tier which is Precise Blows it may say you need x amount of points in the Tree to unlock, so for example you may need to invest some points in the Battle Trance line which starts with Resolve to have the necessary amount of points invested in the Tree to unlock the other tiers.

As ic1male said above, it doesn't really pay to spread out your skills within W3. You are better to focus on 1 Tree for maximum combat effectiveness as hybrid builds can miss out on % damage or better skills like Whirl (for Swordsman) which rip mobs apart.

I'd recommend buying a Potion of Clearance (1000 Gold), resetting your character and focusing on 1 (or at most 2) styles of play for the best experience.

Thanks guys, that makes sense now. I assumed you'd just keep unlocking as you went, not realising I had to specialise. Legends, I happen to have a Potion of Clearance in stock right now! Think I'll go full on Flame Monster.

Funnily enough I got the Superior Griffin Armour yesterday, I've got the parts to build the one above it (Master crafted?) but can't use it for another 4 levels so didn't craft it.

Tempted to play TW3 with one of the gameplay overhaul mods one day. Just trying to allow enough time to pass that I don't remember some/most of the side quests.

Ok, so I took the potion to reset my abilities. Spent five points on all the blue second row, leaving me with 32 points...I used all the five available with a blue greater mutagen but I still can't access the third tier. It says I need an additional point in the tree? I can't use any more. I'm stumped.
