Are NVidia clearing the decks for a new high end card?

I simply bought a 2nd 1080p Viewsonic secondhand 4 years ago when my other, old-ass 1200p 60Hz died then. Am currently looking towards a sensible 27GL83A-B, and whatever is the best relative value 1440p card in the 5700XT to 2070S price range for the next round. I'll stick with the 27GL83A-B (or similar) for 3+ years as my main with the two 1080peas flanking of course. Yep, to some of you guys, I'm (very) late to the 1440p etc party, let alone the 4K afterparty (weak analogy, I know), but said cake will be at my party, it looks good and I'm going to eat it. The way the Waitrose-on-steroids-and-crack 4K monitor prices are, I'll probably get a 4K TV in 4 or so years, after they've improved a bit more and better prices, and again have that with an aforementioned-like card. :)

Again, these people are only the minority hardcore gamers.

The casual majority gamers don't care for framerate or resolution and use 1080p 60hz screens
Yeah. Most wont even know what fps is.

The older I get the less I care about fps. Once it gets beyond 60 my eyes are more than happy.
I never cared. As long as it feels smooth enough, I am happy. Never played competitively to care. Most people that care are usually into some kind of first person shooter like COD, Battlefield, Counter Strike, PUBG, Overwatch etc.

I enjoy single player story games mainly, together with strategy games. For that 60fps is more than enough. So rest of the grunt I like to stick into image quality, aka 4K goodness :D

Over the years what do people buy new consoles or graphics cards for mainly? Graphics. That is what I like and 4K offers better graphics than 1440p. If it did not believe me I would much rather a lower resolution as it would mean I can get away with spending less on GPU’s.

Maximum premium would be to sell it prior to any major news on Big Navi or Ampere, of course predicting that is a guessing game. Before Easter feels about right otherwise you’ll be waiting a good while for a replacement.

So basically when they release some semi-concrete news on performance over the 2000 series?

Yeah cos any 2000 series GPU is basically living in an overpriced market bubble atm, so as a seller looking for resale value you need to offload before that bubble bursts not cos you won’t be able to sell but because price will drop sharply

Remember to factor in the 12months since last product launch guys so that is 2070 2080 Super, Then add another two months for actual stock.

July 23rd 2020 Launch - Stock Aug late early Sept with the £800 3080 matching a 2080ti. That is what i would put my bet on.

I reckon NVidia will push the boat right out there and bring us a 3070 that beats the 2080ti and a 3080 that beats the rumored big Navi quite convincingly with of course a 3080ti that is absolutely stonkingly fast by today's standards.

As for prices I wouldn't be surprised if the top end 3080ti is priced at $999 thus slightly appeasing the many many critics of NVidia's high pricing of the 2000 series, with the 3080 and 3070 coming in at $650 and $550 respectively.

Possible? definitely.
Likely? who knows.

Only time will tell.

Prices never come down, I will stake cash that the 3080 will be almost £800 and the 3080ti £1150. The dumb prices are here to stay people already paid it inc said critics who all own 2080ti cards.

I paid £899 before xmas, Next up is a £400 280hz IPS and i am done for two years. I can and will not suppprt the £1200 2080ti and £1500 Monitor market.

seriously id be surprised if big navi beats a 2080 by more than a few percent if at all. now its suddenly you will need a 3080 to beat big navi?! yet again ocuk has some people living in fantasy land. would i like big navi to be trading blows with a 2080ti sure but i just dont see it happening.

The 5700xt is not much slower than a 2080, maybe 15 percent. Do you really think AMD are bringing out a much bigger chip for only a 10-15 percent gain. Whatever AMD bring out it will smoke a 2080. They already released Vega 7 which matched a 2080. If they bring a chip between 400mm2 to 500mm2 it should easily match a 2080 ti and if on the bigger side easily beat it.

Very possible. Though it will also depend on how good their RDNA2 architecture is and if it scales well. AMD always drop the ball so I am a little cautious. Don’t get why people think the 3080 will be 2080Ti performance though, that makes zero sense to me.

My current thoughts and I am being conservative here:

3070 = 2080Ti performance or at worst 10% slower.
3080 = 15-20% better than 3070
3080Ti = 40-50% better than 3070.

All the above will have much better RT performance than the 2000 series.

You are probably not far off as that's pretty close to how the 980ti-1070 went when the switch from 28nm to 16nm happened. Thing is Nvidia on that node managed to increase clocks by around 40 percent which is where the majority of the speed bump came from. The 2080ti is a huge 18 million transistor chip which even on 7nm would be somewhere in the 400mm2 region so how big are they willing to go. How good is there next architecture. One big improvement they need to make is how bottlenecked Turing is on the 2080ti side. It only really comes alive at 4k compared to the other cards. So many questions and no answers.

On the RT side I expect big boosts as you do. In fact if the Raster performance ain't a great big leap I expect to see Nvidia showing a lot of there 70/80 cards beating the crap out of the 2080ti in RT games to compensate.

Yep if the 3070 does not beat the 2080Ti then it better come very close to it, and a lot better RT performance.
