Current system is quite old and looking to get back into using the computer more for gaming, not looking for anything out of this world just the ability to play some of the newer games on higher graphics. So probably for the time been just a new GFX card.

Current specs:

CPU: i7 4770K
MB: Asus Maximus VI Hero
Ram: Team Group 8GB DDR3 2400
GFX: HD 7970 Matrix Platinum

Monitor: 1080p

Is it this a viable option, or should I be looking at bringing the full system up to date?

GFX options: Gigabyte 5700 XT (again is this a bit overkill?)

Typed a whole reply which was then lost.

Briefly, with no budget mentioned nor any idea on when you would.consider an upgrade and whether it would include staying at 1080p or moving to 1440p, it is difficult to make a proper recommendation. However, for that current system, a 5700XT is overkill. Either consider a 5600XT (with the latest BIOS read up on that) or an Nvidia 2060 Super. Frankly, an RX580/590 would suffice if staying at 1080p without upgrading.

With more information, we can be a little more helpful.

5700XT wouldn't be my choice - 1660 super, any of the cards listed above by Noughtboy plus a few others but it really depends on your budget, case size and power supply.

As to your question regarding gpu or full system upgrade? I'd say you're alright for now and it's not a good time to buy with new stuff not far away. In 12/18 months or so I'd be looking at a full upgrade, budget permitting.

If that monitor is old, then it's likely also 60Hz one meaning above mainstream level graphics cards are waste of money.

And while quite nice for old games and those designed for Intel stagnation era hardware, that CPU won't be doing that well with heavier games of the future.
Next-gen consoles are bringing 8 cores/16 threads as base level in fall/before Christmas.

It's a hard one to budget, cause I'm not entirely sure which route I want to go my self.

A second hand RX580/590 or 1660 super might actually be the wise choice. Just to see if I can get back into the swing of it. Then holding off to see where hardwear is in 12 months time and how the playstation and Xbox look.

Case: Corsair 540 air
PSU: Corsair AX760

Budgets: £400 to upgrade, £1000 new rig.

Looking at the above comments it might be worth me just holding off, to see what happens with the next gen.

I'd agree with waiting, plus it gives you more time to save :)

curveball here:
£1000 for a new gpu and a new 1440p high refresh rate monitor :)

and overclock the 4770k, add another 8 gb ram (to make 16gb) and you're golden
oh, and make sure you have a ssd too

You can easily build a highend system with a 5700XT for £1000.

Don't forget you sell your current mb cpu and ram probably for around £200-250 this can go into the Gpu fund, it's crazy what people pay for used Intel parts, I see used 4790k going for more than a new ryzen 5 3600 utter madness.
