My free subscription for Fire Kids has run out for my boy, he seems to have out grown the kiddy stuff and just wants a tablet that I can lock down etc.
So, the question is, is there any way to turn his kids tablet into a normal android tablet?

Possibly
By unlocking the bootloader
Rooting it
Installing twrp
Then putting a custom rom
Of lineageos or something
On it assuming there's one for
That model
Is there an easy couple of clicks
Way to do it
I doubt it
Done a few Samsung tabs before
And few android phones
Though it's not something
I know a lot about
First thing after bootloader
And rooting it
Is twrp so if brick it you can
Recover it
You either need a bit of
Googling or a forum specially
For this sort of stuff

thanks for the reply, google is letting me down but i'll try a couple of rooting forums
The things I mentioned
Should at least give you a rough idea
But every device needs
It's own custom rom
So not all devices are doable
As if no great demand for
It they don't waste time making
A rom I guess
Given its an amazon device
Probably a lot been sold
So may well be able to do it
If I remember where I found
The stuff to do mine
Will update my post

Quick google
Suggests there are different
Versions /generations
Of kindle fire like 5th 6th 7th etc
So need to know which you have
Seems to be software
Called kindle fire utility that
You may want to Google
I only quickly looked
But looks likely its doable

Its fairly hard to install other ROMs on Fire tablets. But its very easy to install a different launcher and the Google Play store to make it look like a normal android tablet.

And that launcher would/should have lock-down features.

Problem is, it runs as slow as a dog on the 7/8 HD. Nevermind the basic model. They are basically trash.

That said, you know you can still add apps to the kids zone on the Fire tablet that aren't part of the subscription service, yes? You install them from the Amazon Android store on your profile, then add them to your kid's profile. The major issue here is that many "free" apps on the google play store are not free on the Amazon version. You can side-load, but you cannot add side-loaded apps to the Amazon Kid's profile.

They're not daft, they don't give these tablets away for pennies to make a long-term loss ;)
