What temp should I set the heating to for an unoccupied house over this winter?

Trust me you don't want
To feel minus 20
Neither do I ever again
I moved South for a reason :D
If the house is well insulated
And depends where you are
And what the average
Winter temperature gets
Down to then sure it might be
Fine to leave it off
But plenty places further south
Than Scotland in the uk
Don't insulate indoors copper pipes
That brings back old memories of
Crawling under floorboards
And wrapping that nasty denso
Tape around pipes lol
Sorry I digress
What's the cost of low heating
The place
Compared to possible cost
And damage from a burst pipe?
Assuming we actually get a
Really cold spell

Are you allergic to writing sentences with more that 7 words on one line?

I leave my empty (renovation) house set at 12 degrees. Probably burning money, my energy bill last month increased by £50 but it'll only be for a month or two for the cold spell.
I do have the floorboards lifted all over the place at the minute, so airbrick ventilation from outside is not contained subfloor, which affects the atmosphere/humidity of the house.

On that note Mcnumpty2323 - you mentioned not lagging indoor pipes, would subfloor ventilation not lead to heat loss if not lagged?

more than likely
yet its common for indoor pipes under floor
not to be lagged-due to cost probably as well as lower risk
of them freezing
possibly in newer builds they may
use that foam cover-sorry brain dead as usual
forgot the name of it
its like a tube with slit down it and just pushes
over pipes
as nowadays we are more energy/insulation aware
and that stuffs so easy to put on
not like the denso stuff i mentioned we used long time ago
it had to be wrapped round pipes like a bandage
and was a sticky messy unpleasant thing to do
i think it was coated in grease or something with
a lower freezing point than water
main purpose was to prevent burst pipes
rather than insulation/energy efficiency
though obviously it insulated to a degree as well

Just being thoughtful
It's totally up to you though
I don't ask anyone to type differently
From usual to accommodate me
They put up with my weird spacing
So I put up with their normal
Spacing:)
I Reread everything multiple
Times and sort of piece it
Together in my brain
That's why my replying unless
It's a simple reply can take
So long~like this did lol
I also Reread everything I am typing
Some times I still get the wrong
End of the stick though
But the majority of people in here

I had this dilemma last year. I was having the house completely refurbished & the plumber in charge of the project said shut off the mains & drain all the water for the winter months. Any decent plumber can do this for you at a reasonable price & it wont cost anywhere near as much as if a pipe burst & the flood damage repair cost. Bear in mind that Insurance companies will put a clause into your house policy that the property needs to be checked once a week if you declare it unoccupied (this is the case with my buildings insurer anyway)

Thanks. I can do that myself no problem, but I think I'll be ok like this for now. It's a semi so getting heat from the neighbours too.

Thanks all for the advice.

Definitely check your insurance. My dad's house was empty for a few months after he passed away while we were selling it and the insurance stipulated we had to keep the thermostat at 15C otherwise it wouldn't be covered for burst pipe .

If I told you I had dyslexia and could only understand sentences written backwards would you dance to that tune too?
