So put my notice in few weeks back to start a new job with more money and better opportunity, supposed to start in a few weeks and contract signed. Been in current role 6 years. Obviously with all that's going on I'm bricking it.

Spoke to current company who said seems risky for me to leave and are happy for me to stay. Emailed new company to see what's going on other day but not had a reply.

In this situation even if I'm given assurances is it better to stay put or take the risk? Was a great role but will obviously have no protection.

Anyone else in this situation

Exactly same situation as you. Starting new job on the 30th. I got word from the new employer on Tuesday that everything is going ahead and I'm starting as expected - albeit will be working remotely and it's going to be quite different to their usual set up but at least it's confirmed.

I was going to speak to my current employers this week and see if I could have rescinded my notice if I didn't hear back but luckily don't have to do that. Like you, I was very stressed but it sounds to me like you've done the right thing and spoken to current employers who would be happy to keep you. Sure, you're moving on for good reasons but I think right now any security is better than none.

Weirdly, no one has spoken to me in my current company about my leaving. It seems to have been completely forgotten about!

I'm due to start a new role on Monday, been advised that they aren't asking people to go into the office at the moment so may have to spend the 1st few months working from home, unfortunately they cannot give me a laptop or anything so I cannot actually log in or do anything from home. Seems weird that I'll be paid for basically being sat at home not being able to even log in and use emails etc.

I am just over a month into my notice period with 2 more months to go until I am supposed to start my new role. I emailed my line manager at the new company for clarification on the circumstances (job security and logistics of starting the role with what's going on) and he seemed more concerned about the logistics of me getting started than if I start (e.g. potentially working from home to begin with). It also seems as though the company is still recruiting for similar positions within the same division I am joining (a recruiter coincidentally got in touch about a role there on Friday).

I am really hoping this doesn't fall through. He said he would like to keep my start date as it is and would get in touch with HR (presumably about the logistical side of things) and keep me in the loop. Nonetheless, I am plan to give him a call on Monday just to discuss it over the phone as I am hoping that might give me more peace of mind.

What industry is it? Is your current role secure?

My current company left my job open for me so decided to stay where I am. Gutted as wanted to leave for a while as ive learnt nothing in a a few years and not progressed at all. New job was quite a bit more money with much better prospects, however right now its way way too risky for me as I won't be protected and my current role is quite secure as big company (could change though) . Just happy to be in employment.

The new company haven't really given me many assurances about the security of my new role despite contacting them. Just that as far as they aware all okay and would get back in touch with me about the training, any changes etc but not heard anything back since I contacted them Tuesday.

I work within the insurance industry. I would be moving from one big company (within insurance) to another big company (within insurance) if everything goes ahead as planned.

When you say secure, what do you mean? So far it seems to be secure from the perspective that line manager at the new company hasn't hinted at it not being secure and has focused more on the logistics of starting (versus if starting). Like I say, the company also seems to still be hiring for similar roles in the same division, which has given me more hope that it is secure. But I haven't had a definite answer (as in he hasn't said it is at risk but hasn't explicitly said it isn't at risk either, instead, he's been more implicit about it being secure), which is why I will call him on Monday just to check and hopefully gain peace of mind.

I am sorry to hear you felt like you had to make that decision. It couldn't have been an easy one. Would the new company have been smaller than the current big company you are at? If they (the company you were going to move to) come back to you with the assurance that your role is secure, would you then continue with the move?

I was until now under the impression than once the contract is signed, they would have to pay for any losses incurred on your side from them rescinding? However, a lot of what I have been reading recently seems to tear this up and so perhaps I was wrong/misinformed.

I left a job after working for 12 years 3 weeks ago. First week went OK, 2nd week I was in self isolation and the third week I have been furloughed.
As I started after 28 Feb I am not entitled to claim JSR. I have been out of work for a total of 2 weeks in the past 34 years, but that's a rant for another day.

I have gone back to my previous employer cap in hand hoping they will re-employ me simply for furlough purposes. I left on very good terms so I'm hoping they will be OK about it & I only left because the work was becoming boring after 12 years.

From my side of the fence, if you have a job stay put!

We've had 2 staff due to leave in the last 2 weeks/next 2 weeks and one due to start on my team.

Both fo the lads leaving were advised that if they liked they could go to HR and ask to extend their notice period by 6 weeks. The first lad tried, and they said no a day before he was due to leave and escorted him off the premises, the second lad got a 6-week extension. One spends an hour a day on the toilet and 80% of his calls are out of SLA, the other has been here 5 months and knows more than some of those that have been here 4 years.

The girl due to start on my team 3 weeks ago has been sitting at home with her feet up, no work laptop, no access to anything and is being paid in full. Video chat with her on Monday as an intro and we're supposed to be giving her things to train on via screen sharing but as we are a data company I had to point out the security concerns.

The entire company is working from home apart from the maintenance teams, the tea ladies and the kitchen/serving teams who are being paid in full for nothing.

Check the liquidity of your employers either end. It should be quite straightforward if they are a limited company, private or public.

Can they cover their wage bill (you might need to estimate this)? Other operational commitments? For how long? In terms of risk, are they leveraged to the gills heading into the current crisis? Are they in a badly hit sector and have swathes of staff on furlough (some digging will be required)?

On a personal level, do you have savings? Do you have debts or room to borrow? How much? What will the money cover? For how long? Can you take the risk, financial or health?

Changing a job, just like viewing a house in the present climate, is very much doable, but be sure of what you are getting into.

Yep, due to start my new job on the 4th May. I buried my head in the sand for a few days hoping that no news was good news, as I hadn't heard anything. Then the company I currently work for said they'd be happy for me to rescind my notice if it didn't work out at the new place, so I decided to go back to being alpha and rang the new place. They've said everything is still on track, the circumstances of me starting may change (meaning that they'll have to courier my kit to me instead of going in the office), but the start date won't change and it's basically BAU for them. Relief.

We have the same process of onboarding in our place at the moment. My wife deals with loads of it and they have not cancelled anyone, put back their start by 2 weeks and allowed collection of a remote working setup from the front gate, or couriered to their address.

Yep. Started a new role this week after 3 months of gardening leave. Laptop and phone delivered to home last week and currently working through a remote induction for a few weeks.
